I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is create a positive learning environment. Students need to feel safe and they should be excited to learn. If tutors create a happy, welcoming and productive teaching space, the student will be more willing to listen and participate. This includes always staying calm and never becoming…

A common misconception within tutoring is the difference between teaching and doing for. The most important thing a tutor can do is broaden and enhance the knowledge of the students in a way they understand. Within reason, an improvement in ability is far more important than an improvement in grades. I excel at building a bond between my self and…

I am confident that an ability to find a right way to deliver an imformation is the best thing a true tutor can do. It is always important to remember that every student is different and therefore a study approach has to be different as well. As I tutor, I am an excellent communicator, which allows me to find a right way to educate other students…

Providing a student with the fundamental skills they need to persevere and be confident in their own ability to achieve. A good tutor should be personable, responsible and articulate and employ methods of teaching that best suit a particular student. I explain difficult concepts as simply as I can and break it down so it's easier to understand.…

The most important things are: - to help the student become an independent learner so that eventually they do not rely to a tutor for academic success - to give them methods or techniques so that their study is more effective and efficient - to help the student learn how to prioritise what they need to get done (in terms of homework, study, or…

A tutor must be able to get the student to their goal without the tutor doing the work however instead mentoring the student to get there. This platform will enable the student to apply for future studies such as uni. Another important thing is time management and work ethic the tutor must teach to the student to enable the greatest amount of…

A tutor must guide the students learning. It is not about just sitting there and doing the work for them, but helping them to think through it, point them in the right direction, so that they may solve problems and complete questions easily in the future. I believe that as a tutor I will be able to convey concepts and content to students in a way…

Help them reach their full potential without doing all the work for them; I think it is important to let them do some hard work now and again so they can appreciate it more when they are congratulated for their success, and so that they are not 'coddled' into thinking other people will do all their work for them. Some of my strengths would…

Inside CapalabaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student James focused on binomial and normal distributions, including how to interpret and extract key information from worded probability questions.

In Year 8, Emma worked through bivariate data analysis by calculating Pearson's correlation coefficient and improving her note-taking for statistics topics.

For primary, Year 3 student Paige practised identifying sentence types—interrogative, imperative, declarative, exclamatory—and converted verbs into past, present, and future tenses while checking grammar as she wrote.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student arrived without the necessary materials, limiting progress on targeted questions; as a tutor noted, "he should have his work ready for next time."

In senior maths, a student's written solutions lacked clear layout and structure, making it harder to spot errors during complex algebra or financial problems.

Another senior student showed over-reliance on notes for remembering formulas instead of committing them to memory—this slowed her response in timed practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner avoided asking for help when unsure how to begin a long division problem, leading to repeated missteps and frustration.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Capalaba recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip over mistakes now stops and explains what went wrong before correcting her algebra, which has made her homework much more accurate.

In a senior maths session, one student, after struggling with probability distributions last term, can now confidently handle any discrete random variable question in the textbook without hesitation.

Meanwhile, Paige in primary school began sounding out syllables on her own for tricky spelling words and often fixed errors before the tutor pointed them out—last week she spelled eight out of eleven correctly after getting only five right previously.

Daniel got his marks back for his final exams in Mathematics. There has been a dramatic improvement in his results. Thank you. He is going to do 4 unit maths in year 12.

Jessica is doing well with Zac. Jessica is very pleasant and easy going and Zac enjoys the lessons with her.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Capalaba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Capalaba State College.
