1. Give them a correct perspective 2. Encourage them to do better and try things, even if they do wrong they should be. That's how they will learn from mistakes and excel. I think I focus on basics, and can see from the perspective of a student. What the student wants and how the students wants is something I think can gauge…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. From my previous experience, one of the most important things I have learned about students is that some of them are just afraid of asking questions because they think that their questions are stupid or their questions do not matter. If the tutor cannot be patient with the…

Understanding the student's challenges and explaining topics to them in the simplest way, making sure they're learning the "why's" and not just "what's" of any problem. I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

The most important things a tutor can do is build confidence. Confidence in their approach, confidence in their ability and confidence in themselves to solve problems. A tutor plays a pivotal role in a student's development, in both academic growth and personal resilience. I think most importantly a tutor should be able to engage students more in learning through group/individual activities to keep them going and learning with the entire class. Rather than just explaining things or delivering the lecture. It is important to check their understanding of the topic being explained or information being provided. This…

Since different students, all have their own way of learning. Therefore I think it is important for tutors to know the characteristics of a students' learning through the first or second classes, then tutors should come up with an appropriate study plan for students' further studies. Also, it is necessary to build relationships with students.…

I think as a tutor, most important thing is to helping them developing their study patterns so they can utilise it when they are graduated from high school. The best thing I believe is to help student realize their ability in learning mathematics. I consider the shift from teacher-centered teaching to learner-centered learning is essential. Inside CarlingfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alice focused on solving ratio word problems and worked through homework covering basic algebraic equations.

For Year 9, Daniel practised using angle rules for parallel lines and calculated the area of polygons as part of his current schoolwork.

In Year 11, Michael completed revision on probability and interest topics, including working through several trial paper questions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to recall key decimal and unit conversion rules, which slowed progress in multi-step maths questions—"he needed a breakdown and stronger understanding of certain concepts."

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for financial maths became stuck when analysing payment tables, hesitating over which formula to use and losing valuable test time.

In English, one high schooler's motivation dipped after setbacks with creative writing, making it harder to experiment with new techniques.

At primary level, a child repeatedly forgot homework due to focusing on practice tests; this left gaps in revision and caused confusion when similar topics reappeared.

Recent Achievements

One Carlingford tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to make frequent "silly mistakes" in maths now actively checks his working for errors and spends more time reading questions before answering.

In Year 11, a student who previously hesitated with annuities is confidently using future value tables on her own and tackling harder examples without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with rounding numbers has started explaining the rounding process out loud before solving, showing new independence during problem-solving. Last session, she rounded up to the nearest ten and completed all calculations correctly without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlingford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like James Ruse Agricultural High School.
