Personal connection would be my important factor in tutoring, having a good basic relationship and being able to build upon that will make communicating to the student much easier. I believe that there is often a barrier between teachers and students in a school system and sometimes that barrier may affect an individual student, it transforms into…

As a tutor, here are the most important actions we can provide our students; encouragement, support, and consistency First and foremost I am patient. Having the ability to be understanding and change tactics when a student needs a different perspective on a problem requires patience and strong understanding of…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage and empower them. I believe most students can learn most subjects/tasks but it's just about finding the way of learning that works for them. I am positive and encouraging. I believe a student can learn anything if they are engaged in the subject matter and they have…

Make them enjoy a subject. as a teacher you can only do so much when it comes to teaching. you can give them all the work, call them, and pester them, but if they don't like it they will never excel in it. The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are not only concrete plans and a sufficient level of knowledge, but also empathy to understand what the student needs and their natural ability. A tutor, in my opinion, is not someone who places a high level of math practise in the hands of an art student who dislikes math. A…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is providing them with support in different aspects not just academically. I think it’s extremely important for the student to like and have confidence in what they are doing and stay curious for what they are about to learn. That’s why I think a tutor’s support can provide some…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

Truly listening to a student's needs and being flexible enough to alter plans for a lesson. Also, it is important to be patient and acknowledge that not everyone grasps concepts at the same rate, and being willing to repeat concepts again for the student to understand. Everything starts with guidance. Words are so powerful. So the main duty for a tutor is to give the key points to the student and make the student love the subject. So if you give the right guidance to the student they will be more courageous in the following courses. Because i was a honours student both in high school and university, i believe…

A tutor must be able to develop and understand a student. A student will need to understand the concept themselves and it is our job to assist them to understand any issues that arise in their development. To put it simply, tutors are guides and the student is the captain. Therefore we must be able to resonate with each student and treat each one…

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ethan worked through simultaneous equations and revisited key trigonometry skills using practice questions.

In Year 10, Olivia focused on mastering financial maths topics like tax and superannuation, as well as learning how to calculate interest and wages from real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zara tackled probability concepts such as mutually exclusive events and two-step experiments, completing chapter reviews from her school textbook for extra reinforcement.

Recent Challenges

Messy or unclear working was a recurring issue in Years 7–10 mathematics, especially with algebra and geometry.

For instance, as noted in Year 8, "needs to improve on writing neater working out," which led to errors when factorising quadratics and drawing diagrams for trigonometry—numbers were hard to read and mistakes crept in unnoticed.

In Year 11, a student "struggled with drawing neat tree diagrams," making it difficult to track probability outcomes.

Forgetting to write reasons during angle proofs in Year 9 meant incomplete solutions even when the logic was correct; marks were lost simply because steps weren't explained.

Recent Achievements

A Carlton tutor noticed a big turnaround for a Year 10 student who struggled last year with simplifying surds—now she tackles them confidently and can explain her steps out loud.

In Year 11, another student impressed by quickly picking up circle geometry, applying new theorems without notes, and showing much more independence during problem-solving than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student made real progress in writing—her handwriting is noticeably larger and neater after weeks of encouragement, making it easier for her to set out her maths working clearly in class assignments.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton South Public School.
