It is important to make the student feel comfortable when you are tutoring them. When they are comfortable, they would be more open to explaining themselves to you about concepts they don't understand. This would then make it easier for the tutor to explain the concept and help them understand it better! Another important aspect is how you…

A good tutor should not only teach or rectify the mistakes but also should be able to inspire the student to study. This inspiration not only help students in studies but it also allows them to further stretch their learning boundaries and also make them more confident. I being myself a student is meticulous and detail oriented which is very…

Genuinely care about the outcome of a lesson, if the tutor really wants to get the most out of their student then I feel like the student can sense this and is more willing to learn. I am able to deliver lessons in a way that keeps kids engaged and wanting to listen. This may sometimes come across as a more informal approach but I find it really…

Since it is mostly 1-on-1, tutoring allows for more detailed instructions and explanations, and I think this does wonders for students who couldn't quite catch up in a classroom environment. Clarifying misunderstanding, further explaining a formula, providing tricks and tips, and cementing the basics are all extremely important in helping a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is relate to the situation the student is in. Not everyone is the same and that’s why tutors should be able to combat that and teach accordingly. Not only that but also provide the student with an effective way for them to study the subject. Without that studying can become very difficult. I can…

It’s not just about teaching the subject — it’s about helping students believe in their own abilities. A good tutor should break down complex ideas in a way that makes sense, adapt to the student’s pace, and encourage them to stay curious and motivated. Ultimately, it’s about making sure the student feels supported, understood, and…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is break down or at least try to break down, any problem a student has including those that may seem a bit more personal. Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I think that fear of failure is one of the big issues in learning, because if you are scared to try something even if you're unsure, you'll never be able to learn and succeed. I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. A tutor's responsibility, in my opinion, should be to identify why the student may be struggling in that specific area of academics and then to adjust their teaching approach and technique to cater for…

A tutor can develop a passion of learning in a student so that a student can learn and grow even when the teacher is with the student or not. Its similar to teach a person how to fish instead giving them fish to eat. Deepti has been tutoring my son in Year 7. Deepti has developed an amazing rapport with my son and has inspired him emensely. His maths results for algebra have improved out of sight since having Deepti tutor him. Deepti is able to engage him and explain the rules and concepts and reinforce them through practice. Having been a teacher myself, I am very impressed with Deepti's skills and this has been reflected in my son's results. In addition his keenness in maths since having Deepti as his tutor is very impressive.

Inside CaulfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lisa worked on probability through coin toss experiments and tree diagrams, plus an introduction to Venn diagrams for visualising outcomes.

In Year 8, Parth tackled coordinate geometry by practising plotting points and finding intersections of lines using graphical methods.

For Year 10, Marcus focused on quadratic equations—using the discriminant, applying the quadratic formula, and completing the square—building problem-solving confidence with step-by-step worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student repeatedly relied on a calculator for simple calculations and missed signs in coordinate geometry when not listing knowns/unknowns. This made it harder to spot mistakes during review.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student arrived without their workbook or preparation notes, leaving them unable to attempt assigned statistics problems.

In Year 5, messy written working on fraction questions meant errors went unnoticed until the end—he guessed answers instead of showing steps, as noted by the tutor.

In each case, rushed or incomplete process habits left gaps that surfaced in class and homework time alike.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Caulfield noted that a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for help is now openly pinpointing mistakes and correcting them during sessions, showing real ownership of her learning.

In Year 11, another student made a breakthrough with finance questions: after struggling with graph-based problems before, he now tackles these independently and even writes clear, detailed answers without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once rushed through number pattern tasks has begun breaking down questions step by step, reading each carefully before attempting an answer—finishing all the sequence terms accurately on her own this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Caulfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melbourne Montessori College - Caulfield South Campus.
