I think a tutor is best when assisting the student rather than directing the student. A student should point to their respective goal and the tutor will pull them towards that goal. I believe my strong mathematics background gives me a strong edge when it comes to explaining math concepts and ideas in a vibrant way which is easy to understand. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to never give up on them. Such a tutor, whom is demotivating, doesn't care and has a lack of patience will also cause the student to reflect the same behaviour towards the area of difficulty. The student will develop an attitude which lacks motivation, work ethic and form low…

An excellent tutor is one that recognises the whole student and works to understand and facilitate what academic success means for that individual. Likewise, a tutor should always work to teach lifelong problem-solving and learning skills while giving students the tools and encouragement to use these skills to excel in their learning. Through my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning entertaining and memorable. As a recent HS graduate I understand the importance of active teaching rather than reading information off of a white board, thus I know that making information consumption digestible and memorable for students is incredibly important. As a recent…

It is important for tutors to understand that not every student is the same and they learn at different paces. It is crucial for tutors to be able to create a flexible and a suitable lesson for each individual student to efficiently maximise the student’s learning. Just being a support for the student in question. Now, obviously, the first idea to jump to there is academically, and this is super important, of course, but also school is a naturally difficult time for a lot of students for a large variety of reasons, and even if the tutor nor student realize it, being there to help dealing with it is a massive…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the opportunity for real self-development. From my own experience during the HSC, I had to learn many lessons the hard way, and I realised that success isn’t just about understanding the content, but about building systems that help you learn effectively. A good tutor…

I would like to say that Sultan was a fantastic tutor for Daniel and I feel sad to have to end the tutoring with him. In the short time that he was tutoring Daniel, Daniel learnt a lot in maths. Could you please let Sultan know and please let him know how happy I was with him as a tutor for Daniel.

Inside Cecil HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jonathon focused on calculating the area of trapeziums and kites as well as working through problems involving shaded areas.

In Year 9, Angela practised expanding single brackets with indices and converted different types of income in financial maths scenarios.

For Year 11, Marcus revised domain and range using interval notation and tackled composite functions and combinations of functions in preparation for his upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 maths, one student repeatedly lost focus when counting larger numbers and needed methods to be constantly repeated; as a tutor wrote, "needs to stay focused—counting with larger numbers."

In contrast, a Year 10 student working on surface area hesitated to ask questions or voice thoughts, replying mostly in one-word answers. This reluctance limited deeper understanding and led to confusion between units.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for calculus exams spent too long thinking before starting written solutions, which meant less time for actual practice and left gaps in revision coverage.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Cecil Hills noticed a Year 9 student who used to freeze at short answer questions now finishing them with stronger sentence structure and even completing his homework to a high standard.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously made "silly mistakes" on trig identities has started explaining her reasoning out loud and finding her own errors before submitting work—showing real independence.

In a recent Year 4 session, a student who once waited for prompts began adding small numbers using his fingers without being asked, tackling every question planned for the lesson on his own initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Valley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cecil Hills Public School.
