I aim to teach students how to identify their gaps and where to look, whether Google or Youtube or books or teachers. I will teach students study skills like note taking or flashcard techniques. In the end, my goal will be to make the student the expert and…

From my point of view, inspiring student motivation for learning and helping the student become an independent learner are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. When a tutor embodies passion for learning, students are more likely to have a positive emotional connection to learning. And in this way will inspire their motivation to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is help inspire students to love learning, gain knowledge in various fields and learn how that knowledge can be applied in the real world, so that students gain an appreciation for education. I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to be positive and encourage students at all times. When I received tutoring in high school the most effective way in which I learnt was to be encouraged to try the question even if I had no idea how to do it. Being open minded and starting somewhere is such an effective way to move forward and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure a student can fully understand topics that have previously been difficult. I do not think it is not enough for a tutor to simply talk through the topic with the student and expect them to understand it. A tutor should explain the topic to the student and then, after more study…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. Frustration in their own learning can often end up being the reason why a concept is not being understood. Students, in my opinion, are like clay that can be molded in any way. And if I have such a wonderful opportunity, I'll do everything in my power to make the most of it. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is patience and keep great confident about your students, since sometime when they cannot understand the course materials very quickly, the tutors cannot rush them or blame them or being negative. Keep great confident for your students, trust them, and go over the materials more…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. One of the most important things a tutor can do is help students see the significance and practicality of the concepts they are learning. Rather than just teaching for the sake of memorizing, a great tutor bridges the gap between theory and real world application, allowing students to appreciate the beauty of a subject. Because only when students…

Inside ChelmerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily worked on long multiplication and division as well as applying decimals to solve angle problems.

For Year 8, James focused on plotting linear functions from real data and interpreting graphs in preparation for an upcoming assignment.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah tackled line equations between specific points and practiced solving simultaneous equations using graphical methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's written solutions in algebra and equations were sometimes hard to follow, with working out scattered or missing—steps weren't clearly set out, which made it tough to spot calculation errors.

In Year 11, reviewing past test results revealed a tendency to focus only on familiar types of problems during revision, meaning feedback from more challenging questions wasn't acted on.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student tackling long multiplication often erased and rewrote work multiple times rather than moving forward after small mistakes, slowing progress through practice sets and leading to unfinished questions.

Recent Achievements

One Chelmer tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid complex graphing tasks now tackling line equations independently—she even asked for extra practice before her exam.

A Year 12 student, previously unsure about calculus, recently worked through derivatives independently and double-checked his solutions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 2 who struggled to identify letter sounds is now confidently sounding out the alphabet and only mixes up "J" and "G." Last session, he read an entire page aloud with just one correction.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Indooroopilly Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Milpera State High School.
