Having patience while students work through and learn, as well as challenging them with new questions are an important role for tutors. I think my strengths as a tutor is patience and gentleness so…

Listen. Good listening skill is a must. Because it may be the only chance that the student is willing to share with an adult what is really going on. I find sometimes comprehending the texts or the assignments are not student's weakest areas. It may be a case when the student has questions such as "how do I write a report?" or "what is a PEEL…

Inside KenmoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Kiri began breaking down the Biology syllabus and completed a baseline quiz on genetics and evolution to assess understanding.

In Year 8, simultaneous equations were tackled using both substitution and elimination methods, with extra support for inequalities from earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 session focused on decimal operations—including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—plus solving multi-step word problems for real-world practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student left her notebook at school and still needed to begin organising maths notes separately for home study; as the tutor observed, "writing in random places for each one" made revision less effective.

In Year 12 Chemistry, one student struggled with structuring and planning a report—difficulty meeting deadlines meant feedback could not be applied before submission.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner did not complete assigned homework, impacting their readiness for new topics.

In a senior maths session, over-reliance on calculators led to errors like using the wrong formula without back-checking, which slowed progress during independent practice.

Recent Achievements

A Kenmore tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who started working through stoichiometry problems independently after initially needing each step explained—by the fourth question, she worked out the solution solo.

Another high schooler in Year 10, who previously hesitated to ask for help, now speaks up when stuck and only needs minimal explanation before finishing problems on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with long division picked it up quickly this week and managed subtraction and division steps smoothly without extra prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We have only had a couple of tutoring sessions so far but it has been a very short term, however the couple of sessions that we have had with Jonathan have been very good so we are very happy. We look forward to next term and Mia getting the assistance that she needs with her maths. Jonathan explains things well and is very kind and patient. So far, all good.

Vedant has been great. The day after Dan's first session, he scored a B- in his maths test, his highest ever mark. I'm sure he can achieve even higher marks than that with Vedant's help. Thank you for pairing Daniel with Vedant because Vedant has done a great job earning Dan's respect and sorting out the problems that were holding him back.

I'm happy to let you know that Domonic has been a great tutor. Nadine is very happy and feels comfortable learning with him.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kenmore Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kenmore State School.
