The most important thing a tutor can do is make the student enjoy the subject he teaches. Additionally, a tutor can comfort the student that there is no need to be afraid of the subject. If he or she faces any problem in the subject, that the tutor will be there to help them solve the problem. My greatest strength as a tutor is that I am always…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them build small skills which they are able to use in their lives. Inside CheltenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aryan focused on algebra revision and extended into Year 9 algebra, using worksheets to consolidate expanding and simplifying expressions.

In Year 10, Ethan reviewed geometry concepts by revisiting test material and worked through applications involving circles and cylinders.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James prepared for an upcoming SAC by tackling probability distributions, exponential functions, and logarithms with practice questions to strengthen understanding.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was inconsistent for several students, impacting progress.

For example, a Year 10 student was asked to finish the revision module before an upcoming test but left it incomplete, which led to gaps in understanding correlation coefficient applications.

In Year 11 Finance, one student struggled with compound interest problems after forgetting to bring key notes and had to backtrack during the session.

A Year 12 learner avoided documenting full working in parabolic functions—"he skipped writing steps, which hid sign errors"—making careless mistakes more likely on assessments and leaving him frustrated when checking answers against solutions.

Recent Achievements

A Cheltenham tutor noticed that Ethan, a Year 11 student, had previously struggled with timed assessments but recently completed a full sample test within the set time and managed all questions independently.

Max, another high schooler, used to rely heavily on hints for finance modules but now tackles extended worksheet problems without prompting, showing much more initiative during sessions.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Dylan—who was often hesitant to speak up—has begun asking clarifying questions when stuck rather than waiting silently or guessing answers.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

The tutoring sessions with Dominic are going very well. He has certainly helped Kailiana to gain confidence and skills in maths, while keeping a calm, friendly, and easy-going mood for the tutoring sessions. As any 8 year old does, Kailiana can get distracted from time to time, but Dominic has always taken this in stride, and been very creative in engaging with Kailiana in order to retain her attention. For example, there was one instance where she jumped up out of nowhere and decided to feed her goldfish in the middle of them trying to solve some questions about volume. Once she got back to the table Dominic asked her about her fish, and then changed the objects in the question they were solving to fish. He effectively got her back on track and engaged her attention in a warm and gentle way. Kailiana looks forward to her tutoring sessions, with is another testament to the good work Dominic has been doing with her.

Our daughter seems to respond well to Adam and even though it's still early days she is much more confident!

We are finding Eloise great. She is very good with Penny and has really listened to where Penny needs help with most and has prepared for her lessons well. We plan on keeping up tutoring as I think it's making a big difference with Penny's confidence at school. She has gone from below the expected level in term 1 report to at the the expected level for her end of year report.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cheltenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Assumption School.
