Patience in knowing that students are not perfect and should not be expected to digest information and master a topic in a day. Fundamental Understanding of the subject I'm teaching. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to provide individualised instruction, as well as a safe and non-judgemental learning environment to student, something that they may not be able to obtain in a normal big-size class with limited time to teach an increasingly information-heavy curriculum. I have been tutoring students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop a good enough connection with the student which would allow them to be comfortable enough to open up about any questions they have with the content being taught. This involves building rapport with the student and understanding thoroughly how the student grasps information and…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with a good foundation of knowledge so that they can build up and improve their academic result from that. Besides, the tutor is responsible for constantly building confidence so that the student can believe in their abilities to solve tough problems. When they…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students build the confidence and skills to learn independently. A tutor's role isn't only to explain concepts, but also to equip students with the strategies and mindset to approach new material independently. By guiding them to understand the basics deeply and think critically, tutors can…

I believe a good tutor is able to maintain a healthy relationship with their student so they can comfortably ask questions and receive help. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build up their confidence on their struggling areas by appropriately teaching them with patience and efficiency. A tutor should be both a friend and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to become their friend and to inspire them. Building friendship significantly emphasises the friendly interaction between the two and it benefits the student to become more open with their tutor. This allows the student to communicate their troubles in subjects without needing to feel…

Motivate their students. I have a motto that I tell all of my members: "It doesn't matter if we get it right or wrong. An incorrect answer is an opportunity to learn something new." It's something I truly believe and something the children I tutor respond really well to. It takes the pressure off the need to be perfect and instead focuses them on…

The most important thing would be to connect with the student, be on the same wavelength. If you can connect with your student then you can understand their struggles learning the content. It also allows the student to be more relaxed and less stressed which aids in their learning. If they see the process of getting tutored as a chore or a burden…

One of the most important things I consider a tutor can do is explain subject(s) and provide support in a way that is tailored to the individual student. In my experience, many students seek tutors for subjects they do not fully understand yet. As every student learns differently, an effective tutor would be able to alter their teaching style…

The most important thing is that tutors are able to summarise while teaching and ensure the repetition in each lesson. Also, maintaining a healthy relationship with students is significant for both parents' care and students' comfortable learning…

Not just a few questions or math problems, but the concept is the most important to get through. In my opinion, the most valuable thing that a tutor can do for the student is to bring his/her interest to learn about anything in academic subjects. Most of the students nowadays are more keen on social media postings and playing online games. Sometimes, they forgot how important the academic knowledge in their lives. So, bring back the student's…

Inside Chester HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alessandro worked on mastering division skills, including identifying divisibility rules for numbers like 2, 3, and 6, and also reviewed multiplication techniques to boost speed.

For Year 7, Maya revised operations with fractions—adding, multiplying, subtracting, and dividing them—as well as converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Amir focused on algebraic laws and practiced applying index laws to simplify expressions ahead of his upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student often guessed answers in multi-step word problems instead of carefully breaking down each part, leading to confusion about what was actually being asked.

In Year 8 mathematics, skipping clear working and struggling with the placement of denominators and numerators when adding fractions made it difficult to catch calculation errors or retrace steps for corrections.

As one tutor noted, "He struggles with knowing the next step," especially during long division tasks. This habit sometimes left unfinished workings on the page, making it hard to check progress or understand mistakes after moving on.

Recent Achievements

One Chester Hill tutor noted a Year 9 student who used to hesitate with negative numbers now confidently solves addition and subtraction problems on a timeline without prompting.

A Year 10 student, previously reliant on hints for algebraic expressions, recently tackled expanding and evaluating indices independently during the session.

In primary, a Year 4 learner who would guess answers in reading tasks has begun slowing down to carefully read each question first, leading to more accurate responses.

Last week, she finished all ten comprehension questions without any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chester Hill Public School.
