Try different methods as everyone is different, find something that is tailored for the student to help them excel more. I am very patient so I can explain multiple times with different methods until my student fully understands the topic. I have studied overseas so I have different approaches to the same question. I can speak English and Chinese…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is the ability to allow the student to improve exponentially whilst enjoying what they are learning, because from my experience, once I have understood and learnt a concept, applying and solving problems become much easier and fun in a way. I believe not only providing answers, but instead guiding a…

I believe that the tutor shouldn't be the one always in control and leading the session. Especially in early sessions, I believe the tutor should encourage the student to ask many questions of them, to grasp what they know and how they interpret different topics. Tutoring almost becomes useless if the tutor is the one constantly talking because…

Whilst improving their grades is important, the most important thing a tutor can do is help their student find their love for learning, ensuring that they will push themselves to be curious. I can adapt my explanations well, if the way I am explaining something is not working for them I will try again in a different way, sometimes incorporating…

I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

A tutor should always be there to support a student throughout their academic journey by preparing them for examinations and more importantly teach them in a way to get them hooked into learning mathematics. Another vital role is to build confidence in a student by doing practice questions and papers. -I am an electrical engineering student…

Confidence is key to overcoming challenges and taking ownership of learning, and it requires patience and understanding from the tutor. The most important thing would be to create a safe space for students, so they will feel welcomed and understood. This can build their confidence as well. Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. A tutors primary task is to help the student with what they want to be helped with, and as a part of that accommodating to their individual needs and goals. Doing anything else would simply be disingenuous. It is worth noting further that accommodating to the student's needs in any way reasonable is quite close to the most important thing a tutor…

I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

I think the most important thing a tutor can offer to a younger student is their experience, similar to that of a mentor. Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

We are very pleased with the tutoring and Nafuil is a very pleasant young man and easy to talk to. I was a bit concerned that Autumn might be a bit shy with him but she really likes him and all is well. Nafiul has advised that Autumn only has small gaps in her knowledge and he is assisting her with gaining this knowledge.
Kay, Chifley

Inside ChifleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on multiplying and dividing fractions as well as tackling perimeter and area problems using geometry diagrams.

For Year 8, Sarah focused on expanding brackets in algebra and practiced solving inequalities by graphing them.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James reviewed trigonometry basics including the sine and cosine rules, and applied these concepts to exam-style questions for extra practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled with organizing their working in algebra—"setting out still needs work"—which led to errors being missed during multi-step questions.

In Year 11, anxiety and lack of confidence surfaced; the student hesitated to communicate assessment deadlines until the last minute, leaving no time for support.

Another senior student's exam answers lacked structure and detail, even after targeted feedback.

In a Year 10 science task, reading questions carefully was overlooked, so critical information was missed when analysing results.

The gap between intention and follow-through grew wider as stress mounted before deadlines.

Recent Achievements

One Chifley tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask questions now openly seeks clarification when tackling algebra problems, leading her to independently solve equations she once found daunting.

A high school student recently managed to complete each maths question in under two minutes—a big step up from his earlier struggles with focus and time management, especially after finding that ambient music helped him concentrate.

In a primary session, a younger learner who'd mixed up perimeter and area before is now confidently calculating both for composite shapes without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malabar Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chifley Public School.
