By first giving the student the necessary skills to complete a range of questions this equips them with the tools to complete any question. I then allow the student to make the mistake first and learn from it by helping them change what they did. This is then followed up with an example response to a question then the student is given the chance…

The most important thing a tutor can do is give a student the confidence to continue to achieve and learn for themselves. If they can believe in themselves and keep working, they will succeed regardless of their level. I am personable and easy-going, able to meet the student where they need to be met. I have a genuine passion for mathematics and…

A tutor must be able to reinforce the foundational theories and concepts taught in school and from there guide their student through the ways in which this information can connect to a wide range of questions. Exposure to a myriad of problems improves a student's ability to recognise how their own knowledge connects to a solution and thus their…

I believe the most important thing is to have a routine, be reliable, and to have the student be a part of every decision in their learning. My time with a student is not about a test or exam. It is about creating the skills for a student to be able to improve as they move through school and beyond. This is something that is going to be…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only understand where the student is at within their academics, but in their personal life as well. A student's schooling can be very stressful and there is a lot of pressure from others. My role would be to make sure that I am not pressuring them, and that we reward even the…

Struggling with math problems can often feel demoralising and futile, especially when peers “get it†but you don’t. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them view the concepts from different angles, guide them through problem solving steps, and increase their confidence in their ability to grasp…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand the needs of their student and develop effective resources that work for THAT student. It is also important to recognise what kind of work load people are capable of handling so that you do not overwhelm them with tasks, as this would be counterproductive. So I guess, just…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to be patient. Patience is key in facilitating the process of learning as it removes the anxiety inducing pressure of expectation and allows the student to solely focus on the content at hand. Patience also allows the student to rationalise concepts at their own pace. This has the effect of deeply…

I think that as a tutor you must listen to what your student needs and give that to them. Each student will learn differently so it is extremely important that as a tutor you tailor your teaching approach to that student and their needs in order for them to learn best. As I just left school in 2021 I have a good understanding of the pressures and…

Inside Chittaway BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jayden revised perimeter and area, plus interpreted stem and leaf plots using examples from his previous work.

In Year 8, Mia focused on rearranging equations and explored surface area of cylinders through guided practice problems.

For Year 10, Liv tackled index laws—multiplying and dividing powers, the zero index law, and worked with powers of fractions to strengthen her algebra skills.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Mathematics, one student often left modules incomplete before tutoring, which limited the time available for targeted revision. As a tutor noted, "he needs to complete his modules before our session to ensure we can revise for upcoming tests."

During a Year 10 session on algebra, skipping written working made it difficult to spot and fix sign errors.

In Year 5 Maths, another student's tendency to avoid writing out steps led to confusion when converting fractions to decimals—she'd forget what she just did and needed repeated explanations.

Missed homework in both junior and senior years meant less opportunity for feedback and slower progress during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Chittaway Bay tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 10 student who, after weeks of struggling with rearranging equations, could now tackle nearly all problems independently without prompting.

In another session, a Year 11 student moved from using guesswork on factorisation to writing out much cleaner, step-by-step solutions and began asking targeted questions when unsure—something he'd previously avoided.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated with her 11 times tables quickly mastered them during tutoring and got every question right when tested, finishing by reciting the entire set aloud without stumbling.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Tuggerah Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chittaway Bay Public School.
