I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. They should be able to ask as many questions as possible and make them think and learn about problem solving. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. A few of the most important skills for the field are patience and…

Different parameters that determine WHAT is important to a student vary largely depending on the teacher, student’s needs and the learning content. I think the one thing that should be constant in any kind of tutoring is giving students the inspiration and motivation by being an honest, genuine and caring teacher. And I put priority on being…

As a tutor, I believe it is my duty to make sure that students love to learn in general and not just for grades! It is very important to build their learning skills with creativity more than just learning the facts. I can communicate well with students and see eye to eye on difficult topic. Maximize their potential for learning and increase their awareness of their own strengths by creating a conducive learning environment (i.e. strength-based approach, encouragement, inquiry-based learning, one-on-one teaching and learning). All these would allow students to gain better understanding of the subjects or theories in a more in-depth…

The most important thing is to make the student understand there is no reason to be disappointed. I also think that as a tutor, I should be able to teach a student how to be independent and think critically. If a student can solve a problem on her own after a successful session, my job is well done. Patience , Adaptability, Challenging…

I believe, in today's world, the tutors role is changing quickly. With tons of free education material available online, a tutor must provide personal touch for students and improve their learning rate. A tutors job is to make his/her students grasp that knowledge without having to go through the grind of looking for good material. A tutor must…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, build confidence, and foster a love for learning. First, a tutor should simplify complex concepts and explain them in ways that make sense to the student. It’s about making the subject less intimidating and more approachable. Second, building the…

Just being patient and understanding, giving time and attention with younger kids and respect with older ones. I think that's the best way to help them. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impose upon them the enjoyment of the process of learning. A tutor can be skilled, and well educated, but if a student does not enjoy the process of being taught in a manner that which leaves them academically unsatisfied, or frustrated, then their potential is…

One of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is listen. I have seen in my experience that sometimes students have unsolved doubts because their class teacher or tutor does not properly listen to them and fail to comprehend these queries. Anybody can be knowledgable on any topic or chapter but what really helps a student is if…

Inside ClarindaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex practised addition and subtraction with and without regrouping using worded problems, and explored multiplication through different strategies including times tables.

In Year 9, Jasmine focused on trigonometric ratios to solve for missing sides or angles in triangles, making use of calculator techniques and applying these skills to 2D geometry problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael worked through polynomial long division and the remainder/factor theorem, then applied these methods to solve cubic equations.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 3 reading session, one student struggled to stay focused, attempting to juggle multiple books at once and joking instead of engaging with the text—making it hard to complete any story meaningfully.

In Year 10 Maths, "she left her notes at school again and was forced to flip through pages of digital files," which slowed problem-solving in finance questions and increased confusion over formulas.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student repeatedly missed bringing her CAS calculator home, limiting her ability to practice data entry and graphing between sessions.

Missed homework and disorganized materials kept resurfacing as stumbling blocks across grades.

Recent Achievements

A Clarinda tutor noticed that a Year 3 student, Julian, made a big leap in reading—he now sounds out unfamiliar words by himself instead of skipping them.

In high school maths, Jaxon (Year 10) started taking his own notes and simplifying tricky content, which helped him remember key concepts from earlier sessions—previously he'd forget details week to week.

Another high school win: after struggling with statistics tests before, one student scored 86 on her latest assessment and was able to explain her working without prompting, showing much more independence than at the start of tutoring.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Andrew's School.
