One of the most important things a tutor can do is paying attention. By doing so, a tutor can clearly identify where they are struggling, and then provided catered guidance as a response to that. It can also pinpoint a student's specific learning style, allowing further tailoring of sessions to mimic that. Further, it generally just shows the…

The most prominent thing is to work according to the level of child. For example, some students love to study through animations and some by real world examples and also some by doing practicals or activities. Hence; its the duty of a tutor to find the way of teaching that interacts a student and make it interesting for a child to explore that…

It's not just about explaining content—it’s about creating a safe and supportive space where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and thinking out loud. It sounds basic but it is a common error made by tutors. Making sure that the student understands more than just how to solve the problem. That they understand the underlying concepts behind every problems they do. Even if they do not wish to pursue the field in the future, understanding the concepts will give them the confidence to approach all…

I view the role of a tutor as more of a assistant to the teacher. I main goal for the a tutor is to go in-depth on discussed in the classroom allowing the students to wrap their head around concepts that were once perceived as difficult and challenging. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel heard and valued. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make sure the student clearly understands the topic, not just memorises it. It's about helping them build real confidence so that when they answer questions, whether in class or in exams, they're not second-guessing themselves. That means breaking things down in a way that actually makes sense…

A tutor must be patient with their student. It is vital to understand that the student may not understand the concept in only one class, but they can continue to learn it slowly over multiple classes to slowly build confidence. Because of this, the tutor must have patience in the student's abilities and recognise that they mustn't make the student…

From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

Inside ClarindaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex practised addition and subtraction with and without regrouping using worded problems, and explored multiplication through different strategies including times tables.

In Year 9, Jasmine focused on trigonometric ratios to solve for missing sides or angles in triangles, making use of calculator techniques and applying these skills to 2D geometry problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael worked through polynomial long division and the remainder/factor theorem, then applied these methods to solve cubic equations.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 3 reading session, one student struggled to stay focused, attempting to juggle multiple books at once and joking instead of engaging with the text—making it hard to complete any story meaningfully.

In Year 10 Maths, "she left her notes at school again and was forced to flip through pages of digital files," which slowed problem-solving in finance questions and increased confusion over formulas.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student repeatedly missed bringing her CAS calculator home, limiting her ability to practice data entry and graphing between sessions.

Missed homework and disorganized materials kept resurfacing as stumbling blocks across grades.

Recent Achievements

A Clarinda tutor noticed that a Year 3 student, Julian, made a big leap in reading—he now sounds out unfamiliar words by himself instead of skipping them.

In high school maths, Jaxon (Year 10) started taking his own notes and simplifying tricky content, which helped him remember key concepts from earlier sessions—previously he'd forget details week to week.

Another high school win: after struggling with statistics tests before, one student scored 86 on her latest assessment and was able to explain her working without prompting, showing much more independence than at the start of tutoring.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Andrew's School.
