Being there for a student is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Whilst tutors are there to help guide a student's learning progress, they should also present themselves as a supportive friend. The relationship between a student and tutor is important and aspects like giving general advice, and helping students during…

Communication skills is a vital skill that I have gained through my experience volunteering at a kindergarten and primary school and I would be able to apply this when communicating with the students. Along with communication, I've also taken on the skill of active listening which would be important for when I need to hear a student's or parents'…

I think first and foremost, the most important thing a tutor can do is improve a student's confidence in their academic abilities. improving a student's self confidence enables them to not only feel more comfortable participating in class but also makes them believe that they actually know the content and can understand the information. Obviously…

I think the most important thing is to be encouraging and make sure they know how much you believe in them. I think that once you believe you can you are basically halfway there I'm kind and incredibly patient! I was also a very visual learner so didn't quite get the approach most teachers took at school. Particularly year 11 and 12 I had to find…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is that they can truly understand the student's problem and help in a way best suited for the individual instead of a generic method. They should also assist the student and not add to their difficulty in understanding the topic. My strengths are that I am a good listener and can articulate my…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student first. I acknowledge the capability and learning pattern of the student and adapt according to their needs. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is provide constant reassurance in their abilities. I feel like a lot of the time when students feel overwhelmed with school work they lose confidence in their ability to answer questions to write an essay. Having a tutor, someone who can guide them, motivate them and assess and improve weak areas…

The most important things a tutor can do is make learning innovative and effective. The students must enjoy the process of learning and not find it monotonous. Honestly - be patient and adaptable. So many kids have come to me after school and shown me a method that their teacher absolutely insists they use, and that they just completely don’t get. Every child learns differently. There’s no point trying to force a specific method if it simply doesn’t work for them - I struggled with this as a…

Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lucy worked through surface area and volume calculations in measurement, followed by trigonometry basics using visual aids.

For Year 10, Daniel focused on mastering linear equations and interpreting univariate data sets, with practice constructing and analysing graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on bivariate data analysis and time series interpretation, applying these skills to real-world scenarios in her textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, a student left notes at school and relied on scattered digital files during finance revision; as the tutor observed, "he was flipping through pages to find a particular formula," which slowed progress and caused confusion with recurrence relations.

For VCE Maths Methods, another student frequently entered incorrect data into the CAS calculator or forgot to bring it home for practice, leading to incomplete preparation for graphing tasks.

Meanwhile, in Year 3 English, unclear punctuation and skipping question instructions—such as colouring more items than asked—created repeated misunderstandings mid-lesson that disrupted focus and accuracy.

Recent Achievements

One Clayton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who now takes the lead in making clear, simplified notes during sessions—something he rarely attempted before—which has helped him remember key trigonometry tips from previous lessons.

In a senior session, another student tackled her Statistics test with noticeably more confidence, scoring 86 after consistently struggling on earlier assessments and using her calculator skills much more independently this time.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised his tutor by speaking up to ask for extra explanations about converting length units, rather than waiting passively as he had done at first.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's School.
