I think a good tutor needs to be patient with the student. There are times that the teaching process does not go as smoothly as planned but listening helps better understand the student as well as his point of view. I have my own teaching plan and note for every student. I find myself good at spotting main points that student should focus on and…

As a maths tutor, accommodating to students' needs is crucial. Every student has a different learning style. Accommodating my teaching to their style will ensure that students can grasp the subject better. Also, as a tutor, it is important to prepare adequate learning materials for students to practice and enhance their knowledge better As a…

A tutor can make studies enjoyable for the student by becoming his/her friend who can not only guide him/her and help him with his studies but can also help him/her becoming a better person. I am an extrovert and quite good in gelling up with children of different age groups. I love to interact with people of different age group so as to learn…

Having the patience and being a good listener. Having the two is what I believe where you can start building a better relationship with the student. By listening carefully to the student and also being patient with them (since people learns at different speed and different methods). From there, I can understand students in their area of weakness…

Show that they care. A student may fall in love with the subject if they find that the tutor is passionate about the subject and is focused on getting the best out of the student. Furthermore, understanding that every student learns at a different pace and being flexible with the pace at which they understand while keeping an eye on the deadline…

I believe the most important part of tutoring is being able to engage students who are struggling with content. It is important for a maths tutor to be able to ultlise their students interests and passions too the complex problems and engage them with the content more. Work flow. Understanding a topic and being able to question after question will always prove useful, however this is usually not possible without a solid workflow catered to the student specifically. I have helped many students improve academically simply by changing their workflow which makes working less time consuming and sometimes even…

I believe that providing a comprehensive understanding is the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student. Often students can develop superficial knowledge of a topic or concept, which may be a successful short-term strategy, however, I believe for the student's long-term interests, it is valuable to ensure students' knowledge is…

I think the tutor should at all times provide encouragement and support for the student regardless of their background or state of progress and never ever compare a student with another as each of them are in their own path and have their own pace. Furthermore, if they have any problems with reaching their goal, it is crucial for the tutor to…

A tutor has to be dedicated to both her students as well as the subject being taught. Tutors should also be a good example that learning can be fun, or make learning fun! Firstly, I think it is very important for a maths tutor to build the confidence a student has in their own abilities. Secondly, is presenting multiple ways to learn something/solve a problem. If a student is not understanding a topic it is my job to present the information in a different way and to continue to present it in as…

A tutor should be able to help the student in understanding the information to the best level possible which will increase the confidence in the student especially when doing a subject they do not enjoy or struggle in. The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to motivate them to make them understand the fact that they can achieve everything. In my opinion sometimes a student needs that moral support to know that they can score well. Keeping them motivated and focused is one of the main jobs of a tutor. My strength as a tutor would…

A tutor should be patient and understanding of a student's mistakes. A tutor should also help to develop skills for a student to understand a concept, not just remember it, and build on a student's ability to learn independently. First and foremost, a maths tutor should establish a strong foundation of trust and open communication with their students. This means actively listening to their needs and concerns, and providing constructive feedback and guidance. It is crucial to tailor the tutoring sessions to the student's specific learning style, pace, and strengths,…

I consider the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is independence. If a tutor can teach a student study techniques to the point where the student no longer requires a tutor, I believe the tutor has done a perfect job. I think my strengths stem from my recent highschool experience, which keeps my knowledge recent. Furthermore,…

Being patient with them and taking care to really listen in order to give honest feedback to the student. They should teach every student differently based on their needs. Since I have started tutoring, I have learnt to be more patient. Also, I bring an individualised approach to each student I teach, making everyone learn at their own pace. I am…

Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia focused on VCE Biology Unit 3 topics, including nucleic acids and DNA/RNA manipulation processes like transcription and translation, working through sample exam questions for deeper understanding.

Year 9 student Thomas practiced solving equations involving powers and multiple variables in algebra, alongside word problems to reinforce these skills.

For a younger learner in Year 6, lessons covered measurement conversions between centimeters and meters as well as tackling multi-step worded questions that combined addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Biology student hesitated when differentiating between nucleic acids and amino acids, particularly during gene regulation discussions; as noted, "needs a little more support with the details of transcription."

In Year 9 Mathematics, persistent self-doubt was evident: despite understanding indices rules when prompted, she hesitated to apply them independently and made calculation errors.

For a Year 4 student, reluctance to speak up—"she stays quiet instead of telling me she doesn't know how to do the question or because she is afraid to get it wrong"—meant confusion lingered in multi-step word problems. In these moments, uncertainty led to missed opportunities for feedback and growth.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clayton recently noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who now answers exam questions unaided—something she used to depend on heavily.

In another session, a high schooler confidently explained the differences between DNA and RNA and handled tricky protein structure questions that had stumped her before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who'd been hesitant about reading aloud started making more attempts during lessons, moving from barely trying to giving it a real go.

One session ended with the student independently working through all her assigned maths problems after just a couple of practice runs together, showing true independent problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John Monash Science School.
