I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify the student's weak area and to prioritize the student's needs first. The tutor lessons are most effective when tutors are following the student's need and helping the students to improve on their weak area. I am approachable: I can get along with the student fairly soon…

Inside Clifton SpringsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Liam focused on mastering indices and index laws, working through example problems to strengthen algebraic manipulation.

Year 10 student Zoe tackled completing the square and factorising quadratic equations, with extra practice on recognising different forms of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Eliz revised subtraction and worked through arithmetic problems involving decimals, plus had an introduction to Roman numerals using visual aids for better understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student working through algebra relied on "doing questions in my head," but skipped writing out steps, making it hard to catch sign errors—this slowed progress and left gaps unaddressed.

In Year 7, one learner struggled with recalling multiplication tables during division problems; as noted, "she paused often and lost her place," which interrupted problem-solving flow.

For a senior student tackling graph sketching in mathematics, avoiding written working meant concepts were only half-grasped and mistakes repeated across practice sets.

When feedback wasn't taken up between sessions, confusion lingered into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Springs tutor noticed Owen, a Year 10 student, has gone from mixing up index laws to confidently applying them without prompting during problem sets.

In another session, Zoe in Year 11 was hesitant about completing the square but now independently tackles quadratic factorisation after working through several examples together.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously rushed through reading tasks is now pausing to sound out tricky words and self-correcting errors—something she used to avoid by skipping ahead. Last week, she finished reading an entire page aloud with only two small prompts from her tutor.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I believe Paige is beginning to ask Jake more questions. I have advised her if she is still unsure of something she should ask for Jake to explain it again or in a different way. I feel she is starting to have more faith and she has advised me she is understanding some concepts a bit more clearly.

I see how much more confident Nicholas is with maths, the teachers at school have noticed a difference, and he is eager to do maths now as where before he wasn't. In regards to Wade, well he is just gorgeous. He has built up a great relationship with Nicholas, and he actually waits for Wade each week..  Wade makes it fun, for Nicholas to do maths. Nicholas told me last week, s" when i get a question wrong, Wade makes me remember how to do it with a trick."  I think Wade explains it to him in a way that he understands it. I think Wade is fantastic at what he does and you can tell he loves his maths. cheers.

Thanks for this. The first tutorial seemed to go very well.  Jet was certainly very positive about Josh!
