As a student myself, the important things a maths tutor can do for a student can provide a clear and simple explanation and help them how to break down a given problem and apply the learned concept in real-life scenarios. And, another important point to note is that every student is unique, so as a tutor, I should be able to adapt to the teaching…

A teacher must be able to impart knowledge to his/her students. Its not only good that a maths tutor should have a good command of his core area of specialty, he/she must also be able to pass the knowledge across in a way the students will comprehend. The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to think the way a student thinks. The understanding level of a tutor and a student are at different levels, so it is essential for a tutor to go to the students' level and try to explain to them as to what is being taught. It is also essential for the tutor to make the class as…

A tutor should always express appreciation and pride for improvements shown by the student- no matter how big or small the progress is. A tutor should also be able to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the student particularly in a respectful and encouraging way. Most importantly, building a rapport with the student is crucial so as to…

As briefly mentioned in the question above, the most important things tutor can do for a student is to not make the experience another class that "drags on". Interacting with the student on a level where he/she can enjoy or be intrigued by the work is essential. To do this, you cannot let the theories from a textbook stay as theories.…

I believe that a maths tutor's most important job is to build a student's confidence. Most particularly when a student is struggling, building confidence allows them to feel that they can try and fail, which is essential to learning. With more advanced students, confidence allows them to stretch themselves even further. I believe I have developed…

Alongside the expected imparting of understanding of knowledge to a student, I think a good tutor can change a student's attitude toward a subject. One of the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is build up their confidence and stop them from getting discouraged. I often find that if a student is having difficulties, they stop wanting to succeed in that subject. If you convince them that with a little bit of extra work they'll be doing really well, they often gain…

I believe that a maths tutors role is to build a student's capability and confidence to engage with and excel in the materials they are provided with in their studies. For some students this means focusing on fundamentals that may have been overlooked, for some this means teaching them to apply what they know to new contexts and for some this…

Everybody learns differently, and trying to apply the same approach to everyone is going to leave students struggling and frustrated. To really understand where the student is coming from. We are very happy with our experience so far. It was simple to arrange and there was no problem finding a tutor available at the time we needed. We chose EzyMath tutoring as it was the only company that didn't send endless texts and emails to get us to sign up. The tutor arrived on time and kept my daughter engaged on maths the entire hour. Although she doesn't love maths (yet) the look of pride on her face after each session has been amazing.

Inside CoburgTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ava practised addition and subtraction using a number line, and worked through NAPLAN-style word problems.

In Year 10, Jasmine focused on solving and rearranging algebraic equations as well as revising linear equations in preparation for her test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emmanuel explored circular functions—graphing sine and cosine—and tackled trigonometric equations to prepare for his upcoming CAT assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student became overwhelmed when facing unfamiliar algebra problems and tended to freeze rather than attempt different strategies, as noted: "He easily gets overwhelmed when faced with an unfamiliar problem."

In Year 11 calculus, skipping careful reading of questions led to repeated errors during CATs; one tutor observed he "needed to read the question more carefully."

Meanwhile, a primary student working on subtraction sometimes forgot to borrow but quickly improved once reminded.

For a Year 8 student, untidy written work in dividing polynomials meant errors went unnoticed until final checks.

These moments often left students frustrated or second-guessing themselves mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coburg recently noticed Emmanuel, a Year 12 student, tackling complex numbers for the first time—a notoriously tricky topic—but he managed to grasp key ideas right away after struggling with similar advanced material last term.

Yvonne, also in high school, has shifted from relying on hints to independently placing angles and finding reference angles on the unit circle during calculus sessions.

Meanwhile, Jett in primary school explained multi-digit subtraction using an algorithm out loud—something he was hesitant to do before—and now confidently checks his own answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Islamic College of Sport.
