There are 2 jobs of a tutor. To make the student understand what they are learning and also encourage them to do quality practice questions. I have a really deep understanding in all concepts of maths and physics (high school level), and I'm really good at breaking them down into simpler bits. I also know the importance of practicing these…

I think the most important goal as a tutor is to create a positive environment for a student. Being patient, understanding and maintaining a positive attitude has a wide array of benefits, including learning. Second to this is the ability to help a student gain an instinctive understanding of the concept manner. More than just helping with…

As a tutor, the most important things a tutor can do is to help student build confidence and motivation for learning and achieving their academic goals. Tutors should also encourage independent learning such as setting goals, taking notes and time management as it will be useful throughout their studies. A good tutor can identify and address…

I believe that as a tutor, what I can help with most is finding out the missing links in the knowledge network of my students and helping them to make those up. No matter at what point my students start, I think my job is to help them realise they can always make progress from there and reach a more advanced level. I am good at guiding students to…

Apart from achieving the basics of helping a student in school work to ensure they catch up with their school's curriculum, it is important that a tutor assists their students in forming healthy studying habits and equipped their students with effective study skills that will benefit students' studies in the long run. More importantly for…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

A tutor should be knowledgeable to be able to address all concerns of a student and check when unable to immediately answer a query. Additionally a tutor should be easy to talk to, allowing for untrained conversations between student and tutor. Finally, a tutor should be able to motivate their students, ridding them of the disbelief that they…

It enables them to discover themselves and gives them the much-needed confidence to excel in their academics or prospective career path. Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be proud of all the improvements the student has done. It's not about congratulating them for being a high achieving student. Instead, we should congratulate them for any improvement that they have done, since that is one step closer to success. I believe one of my strengths is…

For me it is important for tutor to be able to encourage and make the student enjoy learning. Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Furthermore, it is important for tutor to look at a problem from many different perspective, because one point of…

I believe it is motivating and teaching the student how to get the most out of their time studying in and outside of their tutoring session. It's essential to be understanding and listen to students as not all the students are the same or behave the same in a class. Therefore, a tutor must understand the extraordinary things about each student and act in a way so every student would be interested in engaging with the class. Inside CollingwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 James explored addition and subtraction strategies before using visual models to deepen understanding of multiplication.

In Year 9, Maryam practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, then applied these skills to real-world worded problems.

For Year 11, Sarah focused on graphing sine, cosine, and tangent functions, learning how to use the unit circle and exact value triangles for trigonometric calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for VCE exams struggled to select the right formula without relying on notes—"she needed help deciding which method fit each scenario."

In Year 9, a student's algebra working was hard to follow; lines were crowded and steps not set out, leading to confusion when checking answers.

A Year 7 learner avoided writing working for fraction problems, hesitating to attempt questions unless sure of the process.

Meanwhile, in upper primary, incomplete homework left gaps in measurement skills and worded questions went unanswered. The result: confidence dipped after setbacks and valuable revision time was spent relearning missed basics.

Recent Achievements

One Collingwood tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student, Celeste, who now tackles trigonometric problems independently after previously needing lots of prompting—she worked through all the [0, 2π] domain questions with barely any hints.

Another high school student, Maryam, who used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, managed to solve them using both methods without waiting for step-by-step guidance.

In primary sessions, James (Year 3) started speaking up when unsure about new times tables instead of guessing quietly; last lesson he tried the three times table aloud and checked his answers himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collingwood College-Collingwood Alternative School.
