A tutor should act as a guide, helping students build their own understanding rather than simply giving them the answers. It's about encouraging independent thinking and giving them the tools to succeed on their own. I am a strong communicator and I tailor my communication style to suit each student's needs and learning style. I am also patient,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to first understand the student's current level and their learning goals. This helps in preparing tailored lessons that cater to their specific needs. It's crucial to recognize the student's learning pace and strengths, and to adapt teaching methods accordingly, whether they…

I believe that as a tutor, what I can help with most is finding out the missing links in the knowledge network of my students and helping them to make those up. No matter at what point my students start, I think my job is to help them realise they can always make progress from there and reach a more advanced level. I am good at guiding students to…

The most important things would be to not only effectively teach the student and make them understand/ learn better, but also impart important study skills, that the tutor has learnt through his/ her personal academic experiences, to equip the student to be able to perform well even in the future. I think one of my biggest strengths is my calm…

The main objective is to help the student to gain confidence about a subject that initially seems complicated. I believe that explaining the fundamentals concepts and laws is simpler by setting examples from daily life experiences. Moreover, this approach makes physics and math more enjoyable. A tutor should be knowledgeable to be able to address all concerns of a student and check when unable to immediately answer a query. Additionally a tutor should be easy to talk to, allowing for untrained conversations between student and tutor. Finally, a tutor should be able to motivate their students, ridding them of the disbelief that they…

To provide support in a one on one fashion is extremely valuable. Having extra tools and strategies to tackle questions can only increase ones confidence, which is to say, a tutor can provide what is not always provided in the classroom. It is ultimately this process of developing more confidence and independence in learning that is crucial to…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

I am always willing to listen. Teaching a student is not lecturing them and assuming that they are a sponge and can absorb everything you say. I want to be a tutor so that I…

I think a tutor has to be able to make the student want to learn, and make what they're learning interesting. A big part of this would be to get to know the student and cater to their individual needs and the unique way they learn. This also means maintaining a positive mindset and ensuring that the student knows that we are working together to…

Inside CollingwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 James explored addition and subtraction strategies before using visual models to deepen understanding of multiplication.

In Year 9, Maryam practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, then applied these skills to real-world worded problems.

For Year 11, Sarah focused on graphing sine, cosine, and tangent functions, learning how to use the unit circle and exact value triangles for trigonometric calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for VCE exams struggled to select the right formula without relying on notes—"she needed help deciding which method fit each scenario."

In Year 9, a student's algebra working was hard to follow; lines were crowded and steps not set out, leading to confusion when checking answers.

A Year 7 learner avoided writing working for fraction problems, hesitating to attempt questions unless sure of the process.

Meanwhile, in upper primary, incomplete homework left gaps in measurement skills and worded questions went unanswered. The result: confidence dipped after setbacks and valuable revision time was spent relearning missed basics.

Recent Achievements

One Collingwood tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student, Celeste, who now tackles trigonometric problems independently after previously needing lots of prompting—she worked through all the [0, 2π] domain questions with barely any hints.

Another high school student, Maryam, who used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, managed to solve them using both methods without waiting for step-by-step guidance.

In primary sessions, James (Year 3) started speaking up when unsure about new times tables instead of guessing quietly; last lesson he tried the three times table aloud and checked his answers himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collingwood College-Collingwood Alternative School.
