Students might not know the reason behind their difficulties in learning something, or they may not notice that they have misconceptions that block further learning, so they need tutors to help them out. In school, teachers cannot take care of everyone and address everyone's learning need, but tutor can plan and design the lessons according to…

The most important is to ensure that students understand the basic concepts of the subject and are confident to apply the knowledge in solving real-life problems. I have the capabilities to interact with my students effectively and ensure that they have a conducive environment to learn and develop. This also entails the development of confidence…

A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

The first and foremost thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand where the student is lacking behind or where is the student going wrong. Secondly, the tutor needs to build a good rapport with his student which will build the students trust and confidence which will help the tutor to communicate better with his student. Thirdly, a tutor…

Provide a love for learning. Schools are centered around competition and grades which do the exact opposite, but if you want students to enjoy learning and to continue enjoying it after they've graduated your class you want to teach them in a way that is engaging, relevant, and understandable. I believe the best way is to teach them the bare…

Be there for the student as their base. Confidence is key in a student's learning and just being a reliable and safe zone for the student gives them the first push needed to get going. I am very good at breaking each problem down to very simple steps that seem very achievable for the student and I am very good at building confidence in the student…

It's crucial to help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as to instill a love for learning. Providing…

In my opinion, the first thing a tutor can do to help a student is to first listen to them and take their concerns very seriously. It may be a very simple doubt, but the moment they accept that we are ready to listen to their concerns, we automatically grab their attention and build up a rapport with them. Another critical aspect of tutoring is to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and create a safe space where students feel confident to ask, share, and explore. Once that trust is there, it becomes much easier to guide them, inspire curiosity, and help them believe in themselves. I want the students to be confident and build their self-esteem. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is that they have the drive and the patience for them until they learn. The whole point of why we tutor kids is for them to learn and apply what they know. You also need to love the student and take care of them as a mother does to their kids. My strengths as a tutor are: - I have patience…

The most important thing a tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. I'm really good at…

In my opinion that would be helping a student discover their own motivation and confidence. By showing them what they’re truly capable of and helping them build on that, we can foster a sense of ownership over their learning and long-term growth. A tutor should be able to help a student where ever they struggle. A tutor needs to have full knowledge of what the student requires, what they already know, and the best approach in guiding them. If there is no progress in their performance, then clearly the tutor might not be teaching or guiding them in the right way, in which case they should…

As a tutor, we are teaching our students how to think, not what to think because we want them to be independent learners. Our roles are to guide students in setting up their learning goals, motivate them to learn, and enable them to self-assess. As results, students can improve their academic performance, confidence, motivation, creativity, and…

Inside CollingwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 James explored addition and subtraction strategies before using visual models to deepen understanding of multiplication.

In Year 9, Maryam practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, then applied these skills to real-world worded problems.

For Year 11, Sarah focused on graphing sine, cosine, and tangent functions, learning how to use the unit circle and exact value triangles for trigonometric calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for VCE exams struggled to select the right formula without relying on notes—"she needed help deciding which method fit each scenario."

In Year 9, a student's algebra working was hard to follow; lines were crowded and steps not set out, leading to confusion when checking answers.

A Year 7 learner avoided writing working for fraction problems, hesitating to attempt questions unless sure of the process.

Meanwhile, in upper primary, incomplete homework left gaps in measurement skills and worded questions went unanswered. The result: confidence dipped after setbacks and valuable revision time was spent relearning missed basics.

Recent Achievements

One Collingwood tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student, Celeste, who now tackles trigonometric problems independently after previously needing lots of prompting—she worked through all the [0, 2π] domain questions with barely any hints.

Another high school student, Maryam, who used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, managed to solve them using both methods without waiting for step-by-step guidance.

In primary sessions, James (Year 3) started speaking up when unsure about new times tables instead of guessing quietly; last lesson he tried the three times table aloud and checked his answers himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collingwood College-Collingwood Alternative School.
