A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. A tutor can engage more in helping the student understand specific concepts and make the environment of teaching interesting. The teaching environment can be made interesting by giving the students a reason to learn the concepts and showing real-world…

We need to understand their potential, unlock it and provide our boost to it. I am a very patient person and understand that i may need to repeat my explanations as needed. Sometimes I might need…

At any point, I should be patient and follow their speed. If I tutor one person at a time, the biggest advantage would be being able to figure out in detail what they are struggling with. So, I can make small but definite improvements by giving them the different levels of questions, from the lowest they can do to the level they need to achieve.…

I think tutors need to make/ help students feel comfortable and less stressful with their studies in school. Talking to the students and identify their strengths and weaknesses, and hence support them to improve and reach their fullest potential. I always try to adapt my teaching to the students. I never want to be fixed with one way of teaching…

Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is engage them within a subject, keep them interested to learn more, and motivate students to do their absolute best. The roll of a tutor is two-fold. Firstly, to help students understand the material they are working with. There are many ways to go about this, but one of the most important roles of a tutor is to be able to bring intuition to the abstract. This in addition to introducing effective methods for solving problems. The second key roll is helping…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to pivot their teaching style in order to suit not only the content but how the student learns. Without this ability to change as necessary you are putting your students at a significant disadvantage. Breaking down complex concepts into simple ideas. The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

The most important this that a tutor can do for a student, is to keep in mind that tutoring is not the same as giving a lecture. That needs to be reflected in the adaptation of the tutoring session to the individual student. This can be done by lowering or raising the level if needed, speeding up or slowing down, and providing precise feedback…

My engineering degree has taught me how to break…

Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. The tutor should also help the…

Inside CollinswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on division strategies and practiced 8 and 9 times tables during homework sessions, also touching briefly on triangles using visual examples.

For Year 8, Sarah explored the chapter on ratios, working through practical ratio problems and then moved into probability concepts with grid-based questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jason tackled trigonometry—reviewing bearings and angle calculations—and delved into tree diagrams to understand their role in probability problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, a student lost focus during times tables revision—"gets very disinterested with times tables"—making it hard to build fluency beyond the basics.

In Year 8, notes reveal an over-reliance on memory for multiplication rather than setting out workings; as one tutor observed, "relies too heavily on memory at times…instead of being proficient at multiplication."

A Year 10 learner's algebra work showed missing steps and poor page layout, which led to errors being hidden rather than corrected.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 Maths Methods, organization issues meant past problems weren't reviewed before sessions, leaving gaps unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Collinswood tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had struggled to connect multiplication and division now starting to explain problems as "groups of" and independently spotting the link between the two operations.

In a senior session, a Year 11 student who was hesitant with surds began expanding brackets on her own after they worked through exercises together, showing more initiative with each step.

Meanwhile, a primary student who usually relied on times tables charts decided to attempt division questions without them and got most answers right, even asking for extra practice when finished.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Walkerville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Monica's Parish School.
