Tutoring can be challenging, especially when it comes to motivating your learner. You see the potential they have, and they often hear about the potential they have, but they do not feel as though they got what it takes. Living in such a busy and demanding time can often make us feel the time constraints on everything we do and we expect our…

Instill a deeper understanding and appreciation of the subject. Those are the foundations upon which the rest is built. Strengths: I love kids and I love maths. I believe I'm quite adaptable and am happy to modify how I teach depending on the learning style of the student. Weaknesses: As of yet I still don't have much experience, particularly in…

A few of the important things a tutor can do for a student is to care, understand and support. Although a tutor may have an incredible breadth of knowledge, it is the way that they deliver this knowledge that is key. Firstly, they need to care and understand the student's level and ability to learn and process information. As much as delivering…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient with them and be prepared to explain things multiple times and from different angles. This ensures information retention is kept high and the student's self-confidence is improved. My strengths as a tutor include my ability to explain concepts in language that is easy to…

As a tutor cannot take exams or do homework for the student, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to have faith in the student's ability and assist the student in every way possible to ensure that the student has faith in their own ability to achieve their goals. Patience, passion and empathy. Patience as it takes time to…

The fun part of my job is getting to know my students and getting to understand them. As a tutor and mentor it is our job to make sure our students achieves the highest grade possible, but we must remember. It is also our duty to nurture and guide them on the right path into their future. We must keep in mind each students have their own struggles…

I believe a tutor should be fully committed to each students' improvement and in doing so, also act as a mentor to meaningfully guide students. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is listen so as to understand any shortcomings in their approach to the content being taught. Any tutor can teach the content, but the most…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and personable with the student. Tutoring is very different from a school environment, in that the benefits that exist are going at a pace that is suitable to the student's needs. Tutors are understanding and can target specific difficulties in a student's learning. We also not only identify…

A tutor has the ability to create a sense of value in hard work, discipline , structure and reward in students. With the assistance of a tutor, students will understand the significance of working hard to achieve a goal and can with enough persistence, develop self motivation, a foundation that will be valuable to the student in achieving further…

I consider above all listening to the student and what they do and don't understand to be most important, in order so that I as a tutor can direct my attention and teaching where it is needed most. I think the most important things for a tutor to do is to make sure the student understands how to do the question, and not just give them the answer or formula. It is essential for them to utilise all the skills and I want to foster the ability to identify which methods are required for each question. I like to teach in fun ways so hopefully that…

Teach obviously! but i think if the tutor can make the lessons as fun as possible so that the student looks forward to them as something enjoyable rather than as purely work, the best results will occur. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give them one-on-one attention which allows for a better understanding of the individual student and what learning methods work for them. By working on their study, it helps them go at their pace and gives them more confidence in the classroom. I think my strengths are in creativity,…

I think it's a question of what a tutor can BE rather than do. I found in my experience that I always responded to teachers who were enthusiastic and portrayed a genuine care for the learning of the student. In a metaphorical sense, the tutor must think like a student in an empathetic way rather than merely be a one way stream of instruction. If a…

Understanding the issues of a student. I believe that tutors should be able to understand why a student is struggling with something, and help them according to their strengths and weaknesses. A student won't be able to learn with advice that isn't applicable to them, because everyone's capability to learn isn't at the same level. Gaining a…

Motivation and confidence are two key elements of student success, if I can support them in achieving a sense of self-efficacy regarding these elements, they are bound to see improvement. Inside Concord WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Nick completed an English assessment focused on oral communication, reading comprehension, and writing skills such as organising ideas and editing.

In Year 11, Sophie reviewed the causes of inflation—including demand-pull, cost-push, and imported inflation—and explored how inflationary expectations affect the economy.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel tackled Australia's Balance of Payments by breaking down the Current Account and Capital and Financial Account, then worked through measuring relative exchange rates using both individual currencies and the Trade Weighted Index.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Economics, one student relied heavily on scanning class notes without pausing to make their own summaries or practice deeper exam-style questions. As noted, "more practice before the exam is recommended given the amount of content," but rushed reading meant connections between topics like inflation and unemployment were missed.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 Maths student often left calculation steps out—especially when dividing fractions—which led to "unnecessary mistakes" in multi-step problems.

For a Year 7 English task, another learner skimmed texts quickly, missing key similarities and differences; this left writing disjointed and lacking evidence for main ideas.

Recent Achievements

A Concord West tutor recently noticed Khai, a senior student, making significant strides in Economics—he went from hesitating over unfamiliar business terms to confidently inferring meanings and leading strong discussions about funding sources.

In Year 11 Business Studies, another student who previously wrote mainly descriptive responses has begun shifting towards more analytical writing after targeted feedback.

Meanwhile, Zarraf in primary English sessions now maintains eye contact and expands on his ideas when prompted; this marks a big change from earlier reluctance to share during oral tasks. Last session, he even used contextual clues to infer the meaning of challenging new words.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Strathfield Council Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Ambrose Catholic Primary School.
