It’s essential to break down complex concepts into manageable parts and explain them in a way that makes sense to the student. Using analogies, visual aids, and real-world examples can be very effective. Establishing a supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes is vital for…

Aside from the obvious answer of teaching the student the content he/she is having trouble with, I think there are things the tutor can do that can continue to benefit the student long after lessons have ended. Things like good study habits, problem solving skills and good communication are virtues that can be picked up from a tutor and can be…

A good tutor should be able to let the students make mistakes. A good tutor should be able to create an environment that lets students feel comfortable and open to learn new ideas. Most importantly, a good tutor should be able to get students excited and motivated to learn. I am patient and I am very understanding of the struggles of a student in…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. It's not just about helping them get through one subject or assignment, it's about giving them the skills and self-belief they can carry with them into everything else they do. I think my main strengths…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make learning accessible, and create a safe space to ask questions. It’s not just about giving them the right answers, but helping them develop problem-solving skills and a mindset where they feel capable and motivated. A good tutor should also adapt…

As a tutor, I believe that it is very important that each child feels comfortable asking questions and expressing their queries in each lesson. I think that it is important that lessons are well planned and taught at an effective pace for each child. I also think it is important that lesson are relevant to the children that I am teaching. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is build up their confidence while teaching them concepts. A tutor should not be harsh and instil fear in students in order for them to learn a concept. I have learnt from my time tutoring as well as being a peer mentor in my uni society that students learn best when they feel…

Ensuring that each lesson is well understood by the student by delivering the lesson in a simple and easy-to-understand manner and listening to their questions. I usually end the session by asking some key-point questions and doing a quick recap of what was taught in the previous lesson in the next class. I always do my best to modify my teaching…

Having a growth mindset as a tutor in combination with the 7 C's are the most important qualities for a tutor. The 7 C's are: control (coming prepared for the lesson and having a plan), clarity (providing straightforward explanations and finding ways to clarify confusing concepts), conversation (engage and interact with students), care (wanting…

I believe a good tutor should pose as a role mode and an inspiring figure which the students can look up to. Additionally, the tutor should be transparent and be open to every student's classroom needs and difficulties because each student is different and hence their approach to learning is diverse. I believe I can explain the difficult concepts…

The most important role of a tutor is to explain concepts in an intuitive, understandable way. Often in school students learn the rules of maths, but not why the rules are they way they are. I find that developing a deeper, fundamental understanding of mathematical concepts allows students to apply them to more advanced problems that may not have…

I think the most important think a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence in their own abilities. Schooling, especially ones centred around standardised exams, encourage students to master themselves in order to achieve standardised tasks; however, no part of the curriculum teaches them how to do this. I feel as though it is the…

It also extends to: being available to answer student’s queries outside of class and being a good source of support for students,…

Inside CoogeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Robbie focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, then compared different fraction values using visual aids.

In Year 10, Claire worked through compound and simple interest calculations as well as interpreting compounded value tables for financial maths topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex explored the declining-balance method of depreciation and reducing-balance loans, with practical examples to deepen understanding of financial mathematics concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student's test performance revealed persistent timing issues—"still struggling to complete tests in the correct time frame"—with rushed endings leading to unfinished questions in algebra.

For Year 11 Physics, forgotten content after missed sessions resulted in gaps that "couldn't be covered quickly before the test," causing anxiety and confusion.

In Year 6 Maths, unorganized note-taking meant key formulas were missing when revising fractions.

Another senior student hesitated to write working out for worded problems: "He holds back in case he gets an answer wrong," so mistakes remained hidden and feedback couldn't be used effectively.

Recent Achievements

One Coogee tutor recently saw a Year 9 student, previously hesitant to ask for help, now actively seeking clarification whenever confused—a big change from just nodding along in earlier sessions.

A Year 11 student has started fixing mistakes independently after only one correction, where before he would repeat the same error several times.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to stumble over times tables is now recalling them more smoothly each week and even completed a new set without prompts during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
