Teach them how to think independently, and provide them with a way of thinking efficiently. Math is not a discipline in which someone does enough problems and can solve all the problems, but a discipline that requires people to constantly think about questions. So if one only knows to let students do lots of problems then he might not be a good…

A good tutor should be the guidance for their students. During my time as a tutor, I always help my students to learn their fear during their studies and encourage them to reach out to me whenever there is concept that they do not understand. It is crucial to also motivate my students to achieve their learning goals and mentor them through their…

Being patient to student would give a safe and supported environment for them to at least not reject study. As a tutor, this is the basic needs, then tutor should guide them find what their strengths are, what area that they need improvement, as well as their critical thinking. It would be my patience, i think it is very important as a tutor to be…

To make learning enjoyable rather than seeing it as an obstacle in their way. I am very patient and have good listening…

One of the most important things that a tutor can do for students is help them find what they are learning is full of fun. Interest is the best teacher. When students like a subject, they are more willing to put in more time to practice and learn about it. As a tutor, there is only a very limited hours that I can accompany my student. Therefore,…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is instil a sense of passion for the subject. The student should feel comfortable going to class and doing the homework afterwards. The tutor should be assisting and looking out for concepts and gaps that the student might have and fill these gaps. On top of this, I want to be able to change a…

I think the most important thing is to inspire students to learn more and improve in their own respective ways, as it is crucial that we teach them methods of how to learn instead of just force-feeding knowledge. Tutors should teach strategies that are easily implementable for a variety of situations so that students can confidently adapt their…

We are very impressed by Rish already. Her communication and thoroughness with the first session has been terrific. My son was beaming afterwards from the renewed sense of confidence Rish helped him discover. We're looking forward to the positive outcomes her tutoring will eventuate in.

Inside CoombsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sami focused on factorising by grouping and calculating the volume of prisms and cylinders, practicing with step-by-step examples.

In Year 10, Maddy worked through solving linear equations and reviewed applications of trigonometric ratios using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

For Year 11 Specialist Maths, Alex explored vectors—covering vector addition, scalar multiplication, and components—as well as permutations and combinations through practical problem sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student relied on their calculator for basic operations—"requires calculator for simple multiplying (x 3 etc.), and squared numbers"—which slowed problem-solving during more complex test questions.

For a Year 11 Modern History task, late work was flagged: the report draft and bibliography were not submitted before the deadline, leading to last-minute stress.

Another senior student struggled with organization in English, often forgetting to bring required materials or copies of recent tests to sessions.

When composing an oral presentation in Year 10, perfectionism delayed drafting, as "notes weren't transformed into a speech" until just before practice was due.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coombs noticed Sami, a high school student, took the initiative to create his own maths questions after struggling with parabolas, which helped him improve from a C to a 71% on his recent exam—well above his target.

Rory, also in high school, showed real perseverance by writing continuously for almost an hour during an English session and later received positive feedback from his teacher for thoroughly covering assessment requirements.

In Year 6, Bea went from hesitating over difficult maths problems to finishing three complex exercises independently and proudly shared, "I'm proud of myself."

What they say about our tutoring

quote

At this stage we are very happy. Nick likes Tharaka and his overall attitude to maths has changed. He is quite happy to give things a go. His confidence is building.

Suparna is lovely and very patient and Sitota is very happy with her. I think it will take a good few months before we see any progress with Sitota considering her learning difficulties. All positive and we are moving forward though

Mo is a lovely girl and Ashleigh seems to be benefitting a great deal from her tutoring sessions with her. Ashleigh is fairly motivated and I'm sure by the time exams come around there will be a noticeable difference in her capabilities. Mo and Ashleigh interact quite well and Ashleigh is much more confident about what she is doing after her sessions. All in all, at this stage we couldn't be happier with the way things are going.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woden Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Charles Weston School.
