The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is equip them with the necessary skills to brave the world. Apart from teaching the concepts and syllabi, it is important that a tutor proves to be a valuable asset that the student can rely on. It is also important to establish a relationship that is different from what the student experiences…

I believe the best tutors are more mentors than teachers. A tutor should make sure every student is comfortable to participate in the learning experience. Students and parents expect a tutor to deliver personalised attention and guidance. A tutor should be able to deliver such service. A good tutor would make learning easier by involving the class…

A tutor should accept the student's skill level and understanding capacity and should always keep them encouraged towards positivity. He or she needs to boost the student's confidence to thrive for success without creating a sense of fear or pressure. A tutor also needs to create lessons that can make the learning process interesting and not…

As a tutor I must be able to understand the student’s needs and according explain every element of the subject . I must be able to make the student confident about the subject and also enjoy the learning process at the same time. This can be done in many interesting ways. I am really patient, which is one of the key factors needed while helping…

Helping them understand their strengths and surpass their perceived limits. Not everyone is comfortable with asking questions in a big open setting, so tutoring is a chance for students to clarify what they don’t know and catch up with their class. I’m patient and easy-going; children feel comfortable around me and the general absence of a…

To build their confidence in the subject and not to fear it, but most importantly to build the confidence in themselves that they understand that they can do anything they put their mind to with in their best ability. My strengths are that I can explain the work in many different ways so that the child can pick the right method that they best…

Help them to grow in their strengths and to encourage them to reach their potential in the subject. To teach them to be teachable and to teach others. I like the phrase that “each one teaches oneâ€. I may start to teach them but one day I hope the student is able to teach another the same skill. I am patient and am good at breaking down a…

We are very impressed by Rish already. Her communication and thoroughness with the first session has been terrific. My son was beaming afterwards from the renewed sense of confidence Rish helped him discover. We're looking forward to the positive outcomes her tutoring will eventuate in.

Inside CoombsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sami focused on factorising by grouping and calculating the volume of prisms and cylinders, practicing with step-by-step examples.

In Year 10, Maddy worked through solving linear equations and reviewed applications of trigonometric ratios using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

For Year 11 Specialist Maths, Alex explored vectors—covering vector addition, scalar multiplication, and components—as well as permutations and combinations through practical problem sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student relied on their calculator for basic operations—"requires calculator for simple multiplying (x 3 etc.), and squared numbers"—which slowed problem-solving during more complex test questions.

For a Year 11 Modern History task, late work was flagged: the report draft and bibliography were not submitted before the deadline, leading to last-minute stress.

Another senior student struggled with organization in English, often forgetting to bring required materials or copies of recent tests to sessions.

When composing an oral presentation in Year 10, perfectionism delayed drafting, as "notes weren't transformed into a speech" until just before practice was due.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coombs noticed Sami, a high school student, took the initiative to create his own maths questions after struggling with parabolas, which helped him improve from a C to a 71% on his recent exam—well above his target.

Rory, also in high school, showed real perseverance by writing continuously for almost an hour during an English session and later received positive feedback from his teacher for thoroughly covering assessment requirements.

In Year 6, Bea went from hesitating over difficult maths problems to finishing three complex exercises independently and proudly shared, "I'm proud of myself."

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Mia is loving her tutor, she even said she wishes he could be her teacher because of how well he is explaining everything to her. Thank you!

We are very happy with Elissa. Matteo likes her and is very happy to work with her each week. He is definitely gaining more confidence. Thank you!

Kareem is so happy with John. He is very comfortable with him and feels a lot more confident. I can see the difference in Kareem's attitude, thank you.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woden Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Charles Weston School.
