The most important skill a tutor can impart to a student is the method of reasoning. Often, students who struggle in logical subjects lack the skill to reason why a particular answer is correct or incorrect. I believe this reasoning can be developed with a tutor. A one-on-one interaction helps the tutor identify the missing links in the student's…

I believe that for a student, having someone who can understand and convey concepts in a relational way (not instructional) is so important to a true understanding of the content. When working with students, being a person of support and pushing where they can but not overwhelming the student is an integral aspect of their growth. Furthermore,…

Inside Cordeaux HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Isla practised simplifying fractions, using order of operations, and converting numbers to percentages.

In Year 10, Tom focused on algebraic manipulation and completed survey data exercises from his worksheets.

For Year 11, Nathaniel reviewed domain and range for functions as well as key concepts in the transformations and graphs of quadratic equations, using visual sketches to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, a student preparing for an upcoming exam was encouraged to review solved questions independently, but he needed reminders to check his working instead of relying on memory, especially in algebra.

A Year 11 learner showed limited progress with simultaneous equations, often practicing only the familiar examples and not tackling more challenging variants—this narrowed exposure just before assessment.

In primary maths, one child occasionally made calculation errors when tired or unfocused; as noted, she sometimes forgot if the sum was addition or subtraction.

In senior English, lack of early exam planning left one student feeling underprepared for thesis writing.

Recent Achievements

One Cordeaux Heights tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student's approach to English essays: after weeks of hesitation, he now breaks down essay questions into clear steps and openly asks for help with structure instead of giving up.

In Year 9 maths, another student who previously relied on prompts surprised the tutor by finishing all surface area and volume problems independently—her first time completing the whole worksheet solo.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who often skipped carrying tens in long addition began marking them carefully and handed in subtraction homework without any errors.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Afra has met with Jasmine once so far as we have had the holidays. I think it went really well and Jasmine is actually looking froward to her next lesson this Saturday.

Lazarus is very happy with Joseph. I think Joseph will be a good fit for Lazarus' learning needs.

Charley has warmed to Charissa. It is great that she is young, female, confident and friendly. We have had two sessions so far and taken a break over the holidays. When Charissa returns from her holiday we will continue with regular weekly sessions and hopefully during the coming weeks/months Charissa can help Charley understand how to plan and do her homework regularly rather than with panic the morning that it is due!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Eagle Vale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Unanderra Public School.
