Inside Cottage PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie worked on multiplying and dividing fractions, as well as strategies for converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

For Year 8, Jess focused on scientific notation and significant figures, tackling practice problems to strengthen her accuracy with large and small numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ryan completed work on annuities and loan repayments in financial mathematics, calculating future values using formulas relevant to real-life finance scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often skipped writing out working in algebra and surds, which cost marks on recent tests—"full pages with no working in his latest tests and lost a lot of marks there."

In Year 11 Financial Maths, a student relied heavily on calculator methods for frequency tables but hadn't memorised the key formulas, so struggled to choose between the BAC and 'hours to wait' formulas under test pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner frequently missed critical question details when calculating discounts or reading word problems, leading to incomplete answers even after correct calculations.

Recent Achievements

A Cottage Point tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up compound and simple interest formulas is now confidently choosing the right one for each question, even adjusting for monthly or quarterly compounding without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student has gone from needing step-by-step help with network diagrams to drawing them independently and accurately, even explaining how loops count as just one edge.

On the primary side, one Year 4 student who hesitated over improper fractions can now convert them to mixed numbers at speed, handling new questions on her own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Sam has been great, easy to communicate and arrange times & dates has been great. Sam takes pride in his tutoring and is assisting Jacqueline with her studies. Thank you.

Ashleigh is working with Joshua nicely, thank you. They interact easily and Ash asks questions an feels comfortable with him.

We have only had a couple of tutoring sessions so far but it has been a very short term, however the couple of sessions that we have had with Jonathan have been very good so we are very happy. We look forward to next term and Mia getting the assistance that she needs with her maths. Jonathan explains things well and is very kind and patient. So far, all good.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Berowra Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cowan Public School.
