I consider empathy and genuine regard for the student and his/her learning experience as most important. While it is true that we could be highly skilled in the subject matter or content area, without genuine regard for the students teaching them might simply be mechanical and without connection. As a tutor, I think it is important to feel the…

It is important to help students to organize studies by preparing a timetable. Tutors should create awareness in students that why they are learning particular subject and importance of that subject so that they can concentrate better. I feel I can make students feel very comfortable with the subjects and encourage them to go beyond. I use the…

In order for students to learn to the best of their ability, a tutor needs to create a safe space for them to make mistakes. I believe that the most valuable way to learn is through making mistakes. Additionally, a tutor must demonstrate healthy and effective communication with the student. Both of these aspects foster a respectful and honest…

I feel that the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to make them feel comfortable in their presence. I believe that having that sense of comfort will allow the student to not be afraid to ask the tutor questions they are confused with and get the help they need. Not only this but I believe that when a student is comfortable…

The most important thing is support and feedback. When a student has clear feedback they know what and how to improve. When they have not been given feedback, they will not know how to improve in a subject. Giving that feedback and support in actioning it is the most important thing a tutor can do. I personally consider the interactive and "adaptive" aspects of being a tutor to be the most important things a tutor can do for their student. In my opinion, keeping the student engaged, such as through mini breaks or games between long sessions of work, is the most effective way of teaching them in a fun, yet informative manner. Moreover, being…

Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in a tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. For a tutor to be an eloquent individual immersed with a wealth of knowledge it useless, if they do not frequently follow up with their students. It needs "regular maintenance" in car analogy. Tutoring is a marathon not a sprint. Tutors must hope to retain the students’ knowledge rather than sophisticatedly teach content without regular revision…

Inside Cranbourne EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Arman focused on improving multiplication using box and lattice methods, then revisited addition and subtraction skills through targeted worksheets.

In Year 8, Mahima tackled simultaneous equations by learning both the substitution and elimination methods, alongside expanding and factorising algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Jessica concentrated on drawing linear graphs by calculating gradients and intercepts, as well as applying index laws for multiplying and dividing indices with like bases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, messy or unclear written calculations led to confusion, especially when simplifying algebraic expressions—one tutor observed, "She needs to fix some of her maths layout, primarily on how she sets out her calculations."

A Year 10 student hesitated to ask for help with difficult worded problems and spent too long worrying about unfamiliar concepts, which slowed progress.

In senior years, a lack of double-checking persisted in probability and indices work; mistakes often went unnoticed because answers weren't reviewed.

When homework was incomplete in Year 7 algebra tasks, earlier gaps in times tables knowledge remained unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Cranbourne East tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally stop needing the tutor's approval after every algebra step; she now checks her own work and only asks for feedback at the end, a big change from before when she needed reassurance throughout.

A high schooler who used to get stuck on index laws now completes homework independently and has improved her maths layout significantly.

In Year 5, one student who was hesitant about long division is starting to write out each step methodically, even converting remainders into fractions—a habit he hadn't tried before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cranbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cranbourne East Primary School.
