From my experience, these are the most crucial things that a tutor can do for a student: - Provide personalized support: A good tutor should be able to recognize the student's potential and tailor their approach to fit the student's needs. - Motivate and encourage: Learning can be challenging and frustrating at times, so a good tutor should…

A good tutor should not only teach students the answers to questions, but also the principles and processes behind the questions. Tutors must have clear communication and explanation skills to ensure students fully understand the course. In addition, it is also very important to give appropriate encouragement to students. Maybe a little…

For me, every student may have a different receptive ability. Therefore, a tutor need to be patient for the first time to understand their students. And then, try to teach them for understanding the whole picture, the fundamentals rather than showing them the ways to solve a particular exercise without any combination with other knowledge. Passion…

Most important thing is to be patient and a good listener. I feel it's important to connect with each student and teach them ways how to learn. A tutor also must be honest and confident. I am a clear and effective Communicator. My past studies have given me advance maths and English skills (even though my native language is not English). I have…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. My flexible teaching style means the student quickly feels comfortable and isn't afraid to ask…

I believe that the most important things a tutor can do are firstly not only imparting knowledge on the topic content but also imparting it in a manner which inspires the student to learn and develop an interest in it. Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? I believe I am very clear and concise with what I teach, and that because of my openly…

Empathy, patience, and adaptability. Some tutors don't realise the students don't know as much as them. Tutors need to backtrack their knowledge, retrace the processes that took them there, and impart those vital steps into the students to bridge the gap. It takes time to truly understand the position and needs of students, requiring patience. And…

A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. A tutor should also be able to act like a mentor for educational and professional guide. However, it is very important for tutors to keep a professional boundary in mind. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

Inside CremorneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Jonas reviewed algebra concepts and perimeter for both regular and irregular shapes, then worked through an angles worksheet with extension into angle types.

Year 8 Jamie focused on comparing and simplifying fractions, followed by work on percentages, decimals, and how they relate to fractions.

For Year 10 Jonas, lessons included statistics—such as five-number summary analysis—and extending algebra skills using targeted worksheets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student, when working through trigonometry and statistics tasks, sometimes left diagrams or graphs missing key labels—one note read, "Remember to write the title for x & y axis & Dun forget to write '0' in the left bottom corner."

In a Year 8 algebra lesson, calculation errors crept in because handwritten numbers (especially 0 and 6) were hard to distinguish; confusion led to time wasted double-checking their own work.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student often hesitated on multi-step worded problems, showing less confidence and skipping answer checks after finishing. This resulted in avoidable errors persisting across sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Cremorne tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to struggle with statistics; after three weeks reviewing quartiles and box plots, he now finds Q1, median, and Q3 quickly and accurately without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who was hesitant to ask for help has started actively decoding complex algebra word problems on her own and confidently checks her process aloud as she works.

In primary, one Year 6 student recently figured out the formula for the area of a parallelogram himself after an initial explanation—something he'd found confusing before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Richmond Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melbourne Girls Grammar - Morris Hall Campus.
