One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. However, this can be challenging especially when they have many knowledge gaps and feel fallen behind at school. A good tutor is able to identify and fill in those gaps, helping students realise their full potentials and gain confidence. It is also important…

I consider time, listening, and encouragement as the important things a tutor can do for every student. I believe that the starting point is to look into where the student is coming from to better assess what the problem is. Then, a tutor should acknowledge that everyone learns at a different pace and with a distinct learning style. Some…

I believe that tutors are teachers’ assistant. Our job is to find out what students struggle after receiving lessons from the teacher and dive deep into it so that students can fully understand the concept and be able to solve the problem with our help. As a pre-service teacher, during placement, I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with…

It's to be able to notice the reasons behind my students' struggle and find out the right method and the right way to help them make adjustments and become better at it. It's clear that I am not sort of an expert in the subjects that my students are struggling with, but I would undoubtedly do my best to get them better, including flexibly doing…

I firmly belive in the fact that a good teacher is your last mistake. I really think, a tutor can help students grasp various concepts and help them to achieve their goals. Also, apart from studies, a tutor also is like a ray of hope. They help students get that positive psychology that "yes, someone is here to help me out". A tutor can…

"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink". I believe the best role of a tutor is to be a guide to their students; show them the path to succeed in their goal (tests). A tutor should always find out ways to improve their students and build their confidence. Supporting the student's even in their lows is a quality I believe all…

I consider being able to relate and understand where the student is coming from is the most important thing. Knowing why the student struggles to understand a concept will enable the tutor to formulate a method that would help clear their misunderstandings. This is not limited to not being able to understand the subject, but also to understand the…

tutor is meant to solve or make life easy of a student so do tutor must do.tutor must leen upon the techniques the student is comfort with rather than making it a headache for a student to learn or grasp it.so one must go with student methodology as prime motive is to make things crystal clear to the students. patience- in explaining things back…

A tutor must align with parents, teachers, and the student. Hre should uncover new learning styles so as to creatively teach children. He must be compassionate & build rapport. A role of tutor is to clear the concepts of student individually that they have studied during class. A tutor is there to guide students by making them realise their mistakes and later by explaining and solving the topics. And for that tutor should know his students first. As a tutor I think knowing and understanding the working method of each…

For me, one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is interaction. As interactive the session will be, more output will one get from their students. I’ll try to become their friend rather than being a typical teacher. Homework and self study will be two of the key tasks of the session. One of my biggest strength as a tutor is…

Being a tutor brings me valuable lessons, one of which is to ensure the students understand the concepts through problems. It was quite challenging at first because some problems were quite tricky and the students could give up. But it was extremely important to make them believe that they can solve it by step-by-step instruction. It is not an…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to assess their interest, strong and weak points and guide them to help them decide what field/specialization they want to seem themselves in. I would consider a connection to (and understanding of) the student to be the most important thing for a one on one tutoring relationship. Inside Croydon ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ali practised converting between kilometres, metres, centimetres and millimetres, and began multiplying by 10s, 100s, and larger multiples through real-world word problems.

For Year 8, Emily focused on rearranging linear equations and inequalities, then moved into graphing linear equations using guided worksheet exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jacob revised index laws and scientific notation with a focus on applying rules to simplify expressions and convert between standard and scientific form.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to keep written work clear in algebra—notes mention, "she could consider spacing out her writing, which would help her see things clearer and avoid miscues."

In Year 9, a test was missed because the tutor wasn't told in advance, so support couldn't be provided.

For a younger student, incomplete homework ("Forgot to do her homework") meant less time practicing new concepts.

One senior learner found it hard to remember formulas under pressure; as described: "Finds difficulty remembering formulas that are needed for tests," leading to frustration when recalling methods during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A Croydon Park tutor recently saw a Year 10 student stop relying on guessing and start talking through her process out loud when stuck, which helped her break down worded questions faster than before.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to rush through homework now takes the time to write each step and explain her reasoning, leading to fewer mistakes in classwork.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with identifying operations in word problems is now able to independently decide whether to use subtraction or multiplication and solve multi-step problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Parks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret Mary's School.
