Explaining in the simplistic way that a student can understand. If you can not explain it in simple terms it means you do not understand it. The tutor should be patient and help the student understand. I am patient, easy going and quickly understand the problems that students face during their studies. I love Mathematics and Physics so much that I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to accompany them upon their academic journey, and helping them along the way. A tutor should also make it their priority to create and harbor a positive learning environment, providing adequate praise and encouragement, as the most important thing is that students see the value in education…

The most important thing a tutor can do is answer as many questions as the student has, regardless of whether or not it is a good question. In doing so, I believe it is crucial to create a comfortable atmosphere where the student to feels safe and not judged. Another important thing a tutor can do is to encourage independence, giving students a…

Allow the student to discover rather than memorise - I understand that subjects such as Maths can feel overwhelming if given as rote learning. Instead, allowing the students to discover the content for themselves not only helps with retaining information, but can make learning fun! Build the student's confidence - There is no "stupid answer",…

I consider effective communication to be the most important thing a tutor can have for a student, as this one quality filters into all aspects of the job as a tutor. This allows the tutor to gain an understanding of the specific goals or concerns of the student to then maximise the use of sessions, allowing for substantial growth. I believe my…

A tutor can transform a student's life by helping them become more confident in their academic career, which inevitably improves general confidence. Further, a tutor provides mentoring and coaching as experts in their field which a student can carry with them beyond school, ensuring they are set up for success in their chosen field. I believe a…

Apart from the obvious requirements to provide sound academic knowledge and advice, the other aspect of tutoring that I consider most important is getting the student excited about learning. The best teachers have a successful balance of both aspects. When a tutor is excited about the content, that will get the student excited as well. An…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be there for them not only as a teacher but also as a friend. Different people experience different things on a daily basis, it would be best for the student to know that they are being understood and listened to when they're having a hard time. I think that I am a pretty down-to-earth…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to genuinely care about the student. When a student feels supported and encouraged, they're more likely to stay motivated and engaged. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is remove some of the stigma the student already holds towards the subject. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student can vary, depending on the student. For e.g I had a friend who's outlook on maths was very negative, he had despised it his whole life and every time we'd have maths h would just have a frown upon his face and his mood would change. I assumed this was because he had never really…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student's confidence, explain concepts clearly, and adapt teaching methods to meet their individual needs. Inside Curl CurlTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Seth worked through **fractions** and practiced applying area formulas for rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles using diagrams.

For Year 9, Zane tackled finding **gradients and equations of straight lines** in coordinate geometry, then moved on to sequences and series with a focus on real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student covered **financial maths by applying sequences and series to solve practical interest rate problems**, alongside revision of statistics concepts like mean and median.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student "skipped showing steps in balancing variables," which made it hard to pinpoint where confusion crept in.

During Year 11 coordinate geometry, avoiding working out new types of equations led to errors when only points were given—one note reads, "he rushed and missed key parts."

A Year 7 student tackling area formulas tended to guess answers rather than work through the method, especially with shapes like trapeziums.

When faced with challenging worded questions in Year 5 maths, impatience meant the full problem wasn't read carefully, leaving gaps in comprehension and accuracy.

Recent Achievements

One Curl Curl tutor noticed a Year 10 student who, after initially struggling with transforming equations, is now confidently converting general forms into gradient-intercept form and finding gradients with much less prompting.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student who used to rush through algebraic questions and make frequent errors took more time and completed all assigned problems with only minor mistakes—showing real growth in careful problem-solving.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has become noticeably quicker at recalling her 3-times tables, picking up new methods to remember each set after previously hesitating when asked without prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dee Why Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Curl Curl North Public School.
