I believe that it's a maths tutor's purpose is to push the student at a pace that they're capable of achieving regardless of what that level is. A student can only work to the best of their capacity and achieving this efficiency is the advantaged of personalised education. With younger especially clients in grades 4 and below, I believe it's…

Provide a calm and supportive environment where learning is a partnership and where a strong relationship between tutor and learner is established. Having positive learning experiences are key to a child's success, along with making the learning fun and engaging. I have had 29 years experience as a classroom teacher. During this time I have…

I think the most important things a maths tutor can do is to: - listen to the student and understand their perspective before teaching the concept - find out the students strengths in order to construct an effective way of teaching - be patient and persistent - build confidence for the student - communicate with their parents and guardians…

Although my goal is to see them be at the top of their class, it is more important to see improvements in their tutor lessons and use the knowledge I give them at school to refine their skills I am very easy going and I have a lot of patience. So I am good with kids that are struggling to understand. I use the 4 predominant learning styles:…

Providing guidance and knowledge to students is a critical part of tutoring but I also believe it is import to provide a comfortable environment for the student to learn, with no additional pressure. The tutor must make the classes engaging so the student can enjoy the work and be motivated to progress their skills and knowledge. The tutor must…

The most important things for a maths tutor to do is to help a student strengthen their own ability to learn independantly. It is far more important that a student understands the learning process and what works best for them rather than simply memorise a single topic. Having transferable skills as a student and being able to apply their knowledge…

I believe a maths tutor should be a role model. Where they should embody not only the study skills they teach but also be honest, patient and a motivator, all whilst being professional. Through this a student can grow both academically and as a person allowing them to reap the rewards more deeply. A tutors role is to listen and provide their…

I always find people learn best when they're comfortable and truly believe they can master the concept. Therefore, I would say the most important thing for a maths tutor is to build a mutual respect with their student. From there encouragement, communication, and teaching is much easier. As mentioned above, it is extremely important for tutors to enjoy the content they are teaching. These attitudes are projected onto the willingness of students to engage with the subject. In addition to this, it is important for tutors to create and maintain relationships with their students that emulate trust and belief in their abilities. A…

I think one of the most important things a maths tutor can do is build a student’s confidence. It’s not just about helping them get the right answer, but helping them believe they’re capable of getting there on their own. A tutor should also create a supportive environment where the student feels safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and…

This means helping students develop strong study habits, encouraging them to think critically, and supporting them through challenges so they can become independent and resilient learners. I provide…

A tutor must be able to gain the trust of the students to allow them to feel comfortable enough for the learning to commence. An intimidating environment is an ineffective one for teaching. Make learning enjoyable. the last thing I want as a maths tutor is a student dreading doing their work. If I can push them to find satisfaction and fun out of learning then I feel I have succeeded. Allow them to figure it out themselves. Giving them the answer is detrimental and they aren't actually learning. Inside CurramoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ava focused on simplifying ratios and solving ratio problems from her classwork, using step-by-step examples.

In Year 10, Ethan revised algebra basics and surds through pre-test questions to strengthen his foundational skills.

For Year 11, Laaibah worked through network concepts such as shortest path and minimum spanning trees, tackling exam-style problems with diagrams to prepare for assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, a recurring obstacle was incomplete or missing homework—such as financial maths assignments and network diagrams—which limited the chance to address gaps before assessments.

In Year 9, "she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," so her written work became hard for markers to follow and correct.

A Year 12 student tackling HSC finance questions often relied on calculators but avoided setting out calculations line-by-line; this made it difficult to spot where misunderstandings crept in.

Across several grades, not reading worded problems carefully led to misinterpreting what was being asked—especially with multi-step ratio and trigonometry tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Curramore recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip working out is now consistently showing each step for ratio problems, which has helped her catch errors before submitting answers.

A Year 11 student demonstrated a shift from relying on hints to independently completing several challenging network and critical path analysis questions—something she hesitated with previously.

In Year 6, one student who struggled to explain how she solved area questions can now clearly talk through her reasoning while working, showing more ownership of her process. Last session, she finished all assigned problems without needing prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albion Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Jamberoo Public School.
