A tutor is not there to do a student's homework for them but rather to help them think and problem solve in new ways so that they can complete their work more effectively and be a more independent learner. Thus, a tutor can help by bringing with themselves a large amount of knowledge in the subject area(s) and by having a patient and understanding…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, adapt to their learning style, and create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. The best thing that a tutor can do for a student is empathise. Putting myself in their shoes and trying to understand what they go through and understanding their perspective of the world does half the magic! I am an efficient communicator. I can put concepts across in a way that the other person can understand. I have acquired certifications in…

I feel that a tutor can basically change a student's perception to a particular subject. A tutor has the power to build the foundations of a subject in a simplified and innovative way such that it is comprehended easily by the students. When it comes to teaching new concepts, I seldom go by the book. I think it is more important to give a…

I see students as a clay model, which consists of different minerals and when it is subjected to appropriate pressure and temperature together with proper guidance and methods, it converts into a masterpiece ceramic. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only boost their confidence in a subject, but also their enthusiasm for the subject. Giving students who are bored with the content as they find it too easy more difficult problems peaks their interest, as I have seen in the past. Students who are struggling and as a result lose interest…

Build their confidence, 100%. It's not just about getting the right answers - it's about helping them believe they can get the right answers. I think creating a safe, supportive space where they can make mistakes, ask questions, and feel proud of their progress makes all the difference. I am patient, and I avoid making a student feel silly for not…

The ability to help students so that they are able to understand a particular topic and be able to do questions independently is what the most important thing a tutor can do, and that is my aim as a tutor. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand their student. All students have different strengths and weaknesses, and it is the responsibility of the tutor to understand their student as an individual in order to tutor in a way that is the most effective for a student to improve. For example, one of my students in the past learnt best…

I think prioritizing students’ confidence establishment. When I was tutoring one Year 5 boy in Shanghai, I helped the boy to rebuild his confidence clarifying the knowledge structure and outlining every day possible targets with an interactive approach. The boy began to be vigorous in his studies and he scored 93/100 from 70/100 in his final.…

Be a good listener, find and offer what a student needs from conversations; and be patient with any questions raised. Inside CurtinTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Amy worked on graphing and manipulating parabolas, focusing on how changes to the equation affect the shape and position of the graph.

For Year 10, Daniel practised factorising and expanding quadratics, building confidence by working through examples step-by-step.

In senior secondary, Year 11 student Sarah explored trigonometric identities with targeted exercises and began applying these concepts using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly relied on a calculator for basic multiplication and squares, slowing progress in timed test settings—"required calculator for simple multiplying (x3 etc.)," as noted.

In Year 11 exam revision, one student focused heavily on questions she felt less confident about, spending too long and missing easier marks elsewhere.

For a Year 9 assessment draft, procrastination led to last-minute work and difficulty meeting deadlines.

Meanwhile, a primary-level learner skipped showing steps when squaring brackets in algebra; this hid sign errors until marking time.

During exams, another senior student struggled with pacing, leaving parts unfinished.

Recent Achievements

A Year 10 student, who previously struggled to move beyond copying solutions, has started creating his own additional questions and modifying textbook examples—this shift has helped him boost his exam mark from 50% to 71%.

In a senior session, another high schooler set a goal to improve from a C to a B grade and took the initiative to draft a personalised study planner, now prioritising media and science assessments on his own.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student began voluntarily opening her maths book between sessions and investigating calculator functions independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woden Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Trinity Primary School.
