There a many key things that I believe a tutor can do to create a positive impact on their students. One of them I believe is for the tutor to be willing to share their knowledge in any area that the student is struggling with or wants some guidance in. I believe this is crucial as it is one of the main advantages of having a tutor in that they…

I believe it is important to ensure that the students has obtained a deep understanding of the content rather than a temporary memorization. This can be done by providing students will ample resources as well as extra help if need be exterior to the lesson. The purpose of a tutor is to foster understanding, confidence, and independent thinking. A…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop skills they can apply to their studies and their life, the most important of which is perseverance in the face of challenges. In fact, I grew up having a few tutors but found that they all lacked one thing - constant support. I feel a tutor should always make themselves available to assist their students outside of class hours. I also feel that tutors should never appear intimidating to their students. I am the lead altar server at my church, and all current younger…

In my perspective, I acknowledge the importance of establishing a sense of comfort between a tutor and a student. If this is established, the student will feel more comfortable asking questions and tend to open up more about themselves; whether it be about the marks they are getting that need improvement or whether they're having a rough time…

Being a constant source of confidence for the student is one of the most important aspects of a tutor. Providing the students the reassurance that they can excel is absolutely vital for when they undertake their studies in school. Often times school is the only source of maths teaching and there are not many people to consult especially if the…

Tutors should be able to break down complex concepts into bite-sized pieces for students to easily understand. Tutors should have strong communication skills so that the students will learn effectively and truly grasp the knowledge of the subject matter. The most important thing a tutor can do is approach teaching in a holistic way so a student can develop necessary skills - like interpersonal skills, to strive not only during high school, but once they graduate. A tutor should be helping their student to excel in their studies in a way that is supplementary to what is taught in school. Lastly, a…

I believe the most important things are to build confidence and foster independence. A tutor's job isn't just to help a student get a better grade on the next test; it's to give them the skills and self-belief to tackle future challenges on their own. This means creating a safe, supportive space where the student feels comfortable asking "silly"…

Inside Dandenong NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Giancarlo worked on identifying and using reflexive pronouns, then broke down the main components of narrative writing by brainstorming ideas for each stage.

Year 10 student Kylie focused on sketching cubic functions and drawing sign diagrams, followed by solving cubic inequalities in her Methods textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia revised indices and tackled algebra worded problems from a school pre-test, working step-by-step to translate real-life scenarios into equations to solve for x.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Maths, one student frequently made calculation errors and ran out of time in exams, as a tutor observed: "She rushed to finish and missed double-checking her answers." This led to incomplete sections and lost marks on straightforward questions.

In VCE Maths Methods, there was repeated over-reliance on reference sheets for circular functions tables, with confusion persisting when the sheet wasn't available—especially during technology-free tasks.

For Year 3 English, another student's written work showed very basic sentence structures; attempts at narrative writing lacked detail or complexity. Without guidance, progress stalled when more depth was required.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Dandenong North noticed Kylie now independently checks her own work for errors and corrects mistakes on the spot—something she previously overlooked.

Another recent win: after some initial confusion with the rational root theorem in polynomial division, Kylie worked through a few examples and could solve similar problems herself without prompting.

For a younger learner, Giancarlo has moved from needing frequent help to confidently identifying literal answers in reading comprehension questions, completing tasks almost entirely on his own.

Last week, Kylie finished her extended response questions for chapter review 1 by drawing diagrams to support her thinking.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dandenong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lyndale Greens Primary School.
