To be able to display a sense of confidence in the area/subject you are teaching, as students tend to mirror your confidence when learning as well, having a positive impact on their performance and overall wellbeing. Being friendly is also important as students can often be shy in asking questions and talking to tutors. Showing them that there is…

The most important thing is ensuring you build confidence in a students understanding of the subject as a whole as it is through this that a student would be able to face any questions that may be posed to them and have confidence within themselves that they are able to understand the topics given throughout their learning. Without this, you would…

Being patient and flexible. Each child has a different learning style and speed. Therefore tutors need to be able to understand that and try new methods to teach if their current one is not very effective. My strengths as a tutor include being fun. I can teach students in a way that engages them, but I also know when I need to be firm. I am very…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is remove the fear around a subject. For many students, especially in maths and science, the volume of information can be overwhelming. The most important thing a tutor can do is adjust their teaching methods and style based on each student. Teaching with only one style and using the same methods for everyone won't work, and if you can't adjust, your sessions becomes very robotic and boring. Make sure that students feel comfortable in the environment of learning, and not just teaching them the concepts they need to get good grades but also help them develop skills that can be applied later in life like critical thinking, I think it’s also important that as tutors, we help take some of the stress that naturally comes with school off…

Inside Dandenong SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aryan focused on recognising number patterns and writing numbers as words, alongside practicing addition with 4-digit numbers using hands-on worksheets.

In Year 9, Aidan worked through applications of trigonometric ratios in worded problems and reviewed the area of a triangle by tackling reasoning questions with formula breakdowns.

For Year 10, Maddy practiced graphing parabolas including translations along both axes and found x- and y-intercepts to consolidate her understanding before upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student was set homework to write numbers as words up to the thousandths, but this was not completed, making it harder to reinforce number-word connections.

In Year 5 maths, finger counting persisted for addition and subtraction—"He should work on comprehending worded problems without assistance," one tutor noted—which slowed progress with multi-step questions.

A Year 9 student in algebra skipped showing working for equations, so sign errors went unnoticed until answers were checked.

During a senior exam review (Year 12), time management issues meant rushed final answers and missed marks despite understanding concepts; the lost opportunity lingered after the bell rang.

Recent Achievements

A Dandenong South tutor noticed one Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to ask questions, now works through challenging percentage increase and decrease problems independently and actively seeks clarification only when truly stuck.

In a recent session with a Year 11 student, the tutor observed her confidently applying SOHCAHTOA to trigonometry problems—something she struggled to visualise before—and moving on to more advanced cases involving unknown sides and angles.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed progress by using number lines for addition and subtraction without prompting, having initially needed step-by-step guidance for every question.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dandenong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mt Hira College.
