To expose someone to a subject in a manner that is encouraging and complete. There are many people who were irresponsibly exposed to subjects as rigorous as computer science and mathematics, as a consequence of which they start to believe that the subject is impossible, which with the little experience I have, I have never found to be the case. A…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to let the students enjoy and appreciate the lesson. Only then, they will be able to understand and excel in the subjects. I am really good at identifying the difficulty that a student face and guide him or her on how he can overcome the situation. Many a times, students are not meeting his…

The most important things for a tutor are to be responsive/communicative and adaptable, because different people learn differently and tutoring is done to make sure that the student understands. I am familiar with the curriculum, as I went through the same curriculum (Band 5 for Advanced Maths and E3 for Maths Ext…

Teaching them how to study is the key. Helping them to get better grades is definitely important, but teaching them the method to study is more important. Since I have just completed the accelerated Maths Method with a score of 99, I am still very fresh and familiar with the contents. I am also bilingual; I am fluent in both English and Mandarin.…

It is very important that a tutor can prepare the students with knowledge that they require to perform their best at school. Therefore, in order to achieve such thing, a tutor need to be able to identify where are the students' weaknesses, plan out what method of teaching the tutor can help to improve such weaknesses and ensure to develop a good…

From what I have been taught from my previous teacher, I believe that the most important thing for a tutor is their professional job ethnics. It means that a tutor needs to provide students with accurate knowledge and full effort to help students truly understand and solve the puzzle easily. What a tutor teaches needs to be revised to examine…

Building confidence is the most important thing a tutor can possibly do for a student. It's very important for a tutor to listen a student's worry points and problems and guide him accordingly to overcome them without breaking his confidence. It's necessary to be a good mentor and help students just not academically but advice them on any…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, support, and encouragement. Whether in engineering, literature, or biology, making the subject accessible and engaging is…

I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. My personal opinion on me is I can understand the problem being faced by the students despite their denial about the problem and eventually bring them…

A good relationship, different than that of a students/teacher, where the student(s) feel like they can tell me that they don't understand and won't be in trouble for it. A clear explanation of what they are struggling with. Good sets of notes for later reference when studying I can explain complicated material using real life understandable…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. It is only that foundation can a tutor be able to deliver his best and at the same time the student will be keen to learn. A supportive tutor helps build a student's confidence, fostering resilience and a growth mindset. In addition, it is crucial for tutors to be motivating and inspire a genuine love of learning. When…

The most important thing would be to create a safe space for students, so they will feel welcomed and understood. This can build their confidence as well. Inside DarlinghurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Maddison worked on trigonometry, focusing on finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles and solving problems involving elevation, depression, and bearings using diagrams.

For Year 10, revision included bearings and angle of depression before moving into probability concepts—correcting worksheet errors and previewing relative frequency and non-linear relationships.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student prepared for exams by discussing theoretical versus experimental probability with examples on relative frequency, followed by a review of non-linear relationships including parabolas, exponentials, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly avoided asking questions in class when confused, especially during algebra and probability lessons; as one tutor noted, "she needed extra explanation, but didn't seek it out." This meant confusion built up until revisited later.

In Year 10 mathematics, another student struggled with exam preparation because revision focused only on familiar problems—when new question types appeared, confidence dropped sharply.

A senior student's messy working in geometry made errors hard to trace: "Working was so disorganised that small sign errors went unnoticed," a tutor observed. After the test, time was lost hunting for simple mistakes instead of reviewing concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Darlinghurst tutor noticed Maddison, a Year 9 student, now actively asks for help when stuck instead of guessing—something she avoided in earlier sessions.

In Year 11 maths, William took the initiative to list specific assignment areas he wanted to revisit and worked through complex probability questions with less guidance than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student recently completed 25 multiplication questions in under three minutes—a big jump from her slower attempts last term. Last week's session ended with her finishing all problems independently and double-checking her answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Darlinghurst Public School.
