As a current student, I would be able to relate with the student which would makes it easier to resonate, approach and engage with the student to create a fun learning environment. Being a uni student, I can better understand the perspectives and thought processes of fellow students, which can help me tailor my explanations and solutions…

My students always have so much fun in my classes. I think it is important, because when students are enjoying themselves in the learning process, it makes it so much easier to learn. That is why I feel it is so important to build an easy rapport with students in the beginning, making the student feel at ease, and comfortable, putting the student…

If it's a correct match of a student and a teacher, then definitely a tutor can change the overall personality of his student and in turn learn from him as well. It's not only about grades and positions but about life changing lessons that a tutor can give to his students. I am dedicated and true to my students, and according to me this is the…

I have always felt the most important thing to do for them is to - rid them of the fear of that subject and making them self sufficient. I study pure mathematics in university , because I see a certain kind of beauty in natural sciences , therefore tend to bring my student to appreciate the language of the universe in a light they probably…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop a study routine and to teach them how to study efficiently. This will allow the student to develop a sense of independence and help them organise their time properly, and as a result of being well organised I believe it will help the student to feel more…

Help them to understand that they can learn. That they understand that teaching is one aspect of the education process and the other is learning. That all students have the capacity to learn especially if the teacher is prepared to apply their best effort to offering those students a way to understand the information. This can be assisted if both…

Guide them, just give them the tools to think and get to the right answers by themselves. It might take some time but everyone is capable of accomplishing what they want Although I love maths and logics I am a really sociable person so It is easy and nice to help someone understand something. I have also worked with children as a tutor before and…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is none other than making the student truly understand the solution to a problem, and the understanding of how the solution is built up, instead of forcing the student to memorize a certain formula to solve a problem, teaching them to recognize patterns as well as using simple…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student include: 1. Foster Understanding: A tutor’s primary role is to help the student grasp the subject matter. This means breaking down complex ideas into simpler parts, providing clear explanations, and offering different perspectives until the student understands. 2. Build Confidence: By…

As previously mentioned, making the student comfortable and willing to learn the subject is what a tutor can do to a student. This change shapes the future of the learner while improving the mental capability to think more logically. My strengths as a tutor as noticed by my informal teaching were communication and style of teaching. I answered…

You must be adaptable, and change according to how each student acts since every individual is very distinct, this will help cater to their differences (such as learning speed). Must also remember to leave no one student behind and pick them up when they fail, help them learn from their mistakes. I am very considerate and patient, thus able to…

Keep motivating students to learn and to discover new things, to teach them that they don't have to be overwhelmed by their studies and that learning is a lifelong journey. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

I think the most important thing to understand as a tutor is that different students think differently. Certain students will naturally have more or less affinity to different subjects, but also different ways of learning. Trying to figure out which way to best teach requires understanding which way students are best able to learn. For instance,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and offer consistent support. A good tutor helps a student feel heard, respected, and capable. Beyond just teaching academic content, I believe it’s about empowering students — making sure they know their struggles are valid and that improvement is always possible. Tutors should guide,…

Communication, patience, understanding. Clearly explaining the topic with either simple or appropriate terms depending on the student's level. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is adapt to suit their needs. Whilst many tutors can simply pass on content, a strong tutor is capable of teaching content in a way that suits the learning needs of a student. This may include using different communication methods, teaching at different paces and understanding the students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel confident with any subject or topic they are struggling with. To provide continuous guidance and support to them. To ensure that no student is left behind in any way. To motivate them to give their 100% in every subject. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is to simplify…

Inside DarlinghurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Maddison worked on trigonometry, focusing on finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles and solving problems involving elevation, depression, and bearings using diagrams.

For Year 10, revision included bearings and angle of depression before moving into probability concepts—correcting worksheet errors and previewing relative frequency and non-linear relationships.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student prepared for exams by discussing theoretical versus experimental probability with examples on relative frequency, followed by a review of non-linear relationships including parabolas, exponentials, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly avoided asking questions in class when confused, especially during algebra and probability lessons; as one tutor noted, "she needed extra explanation, but didn't seek it out." This meant confusion built up until revisited later.

In Year 10 mathematics, another student struggled with exam preparation because revision focused only on familiar problems—when new question types appeared, confidence dropped sharply.

A senior student's messy working in geometry made errors hard to trace: "Working was so disorganised that small sign errors went unnoticed," a tutor observed. After the test, time was lost hunting for simple mistakes instead of reviewing concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Darlinghurst tutor noticed Maddison, a Year 9 student, now actively asks for help when stuck instead of guessing—something she avoided in earlier sessions.

In Year 11 maths, William took the initiative to list specific assignment areas he wanted to revisit and worked through complex probability questions with less guidance than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student recently completed 25 multiplication questions in under three minutes—a big jump from her slower attempts last term. Last week's session ended with her finishing all problems independently and double-checking her answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Darlinghurst Public School.
