A tutor must be able to communicate effectively and teach strategically, adjusting their methods to the student. A teacher must also be willing to accept their mistakes; a teacher can become the student and vice versa A tutor must be calm and patient, allowing for quick-thinking and solving questions on the spot, which is typically rather…

I think the most important thing tutor can provide for their students is new perspectives both on learning and their subjects. A tutor should help the student understand topics they struggle with and add to the teaching from teachers and help them finding new ways to learn. While simultaneously help the student find enjoyment for the subject which…

One of the most important things I consider a tutor can do is explain subject(s) and provide support in a way that is tailored to the individual student. In my experience, many students seek tutors for subjects they do not fully understand yet. As every student learns differently, an effective tutor would be able to alter their teaching style…

According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to hold his hand and guide him in the most suitable way such that the student falls in love with the subject. I always believe that it is the tutor that determines a student's interest in a particular subject. The strengths in me as a tutor includes the ability to guide…

A tutor can teach according to the need of a student which is not possible in a class. Even a child can tell his or her weakness frankly which they can't express in the class I start from the basic. A tutor plays a pivotal role in a student's development, in both academic growth and personal resilience. Thus, it is essential for a tutor to be a source of support and provide guidance when navigating these…

I think it is very important as a tutor to start a topic from its basic and build a strong idea of the subject material so that the student enjoys studying. That is going to boost up the student's confidence on the subject. I can not stress enough about the importance of building confidence in a student. I am very patient with my students and I am…

A tutor should be there to support the student through all academic struggles they are facing and help the student reach all their academic goals. The tutor should be familiar with their students learning style and preferences, then adjust their tutoring to suit. A tutor should also create a safe environment where the student feels they can ask…

I've always been hesitant to answer questions in class because I feared being wrong. At home when my parents asked me that same question, I answered without the fear of being wrong. A tutor has to understand about what kind of learner his/her student is. As the student could be visual learner, a kinesthetic learner, or just an auditory learner, the teacher has to use appropriate teaching methods. I can explain concepts clearly. I think a tutor's role goes beyond simply offering solutions to problems; instead, they should steer students towards finding answers and ensure a solid grasp of the required steps. Additionally, adaptability is crucial, as teaching methods should be flexible to accommodate diverse learning styles. A tutor ought to be non-judgmental, patient, and…

Angie, Denistone West

Inside Denistone WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student John focused on mastering addition, multiplication, and division of fractions, along with practice simplifying fractions using short quizzes and step-by-step examples.

In Year 11, Amber worked through financial mathematics topics including loans and annuities, tackling loan repayment tables and real-world calculation exercises from Chapter 4.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Hannah concentrated on advanced trigonometry questions—specifically trig graphing and equations—then reviewed log laws by analysing exam-style problems she found challenging in her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student repeatedly tried to solve fraction problems mentally rather than writing out steps; as a tutor noted, "when taken through the steps he is able to complete them, however struggled when he attempted to do the question in his head." This led to confusion and errors.

In Year 12 economics, another student's notes showed limited use of subject-specific terminology—terms like 'balance of payments' were not consistently recorded or reviewed, which slowed their progress on more complex questions.

For a Year 11 physics lesson, missing foundational definitions (such as volts and resistance) meant exam-style circuit problems took longer than expected.

Recent Achievements

A Year 11 student in Denistone West, who was initially unsure about integrating logarithms, became much more confident applying the reverse chain rule after some practice. She even started tackling tougher questions on her own.

Another high school student showed real progress in economics; after previously mixing up interest rates and monetary policy, he could now explain how changes by the RBA affect investment and exchange rates without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who used to rush through maths problems is now carefully showing all his working out rather than just aiming for the answer.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ermington Public School.
