In my opinion, a tutor's prime responsibility is to make the learner comfortable and ready for learning. I strongly believe that teaching doesn't always means learning is taking place. For successful learning, a tutor has to develop love and enthusiasm for learning in his student. A tutor has to make his/ her lessons engaging for the learner to…

I have been inspired by educators who encourage their students' learning and find different ways to teach the same concepts. For students who struggle, helping them understand basic/intermediate concepts is a big step. Getting quality responses and correct answers by themselves builds confidence in student learning, and creates positive feedback…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate their successes, big or small. It can be difficult for some students to maintain a love for learning, or even just develop a motivation to study more, so I believe that a tutor is a pillar of support for the student throughout their learning. A tutor can give that…

Learning can be challenging for some people and this can be frustrating, so having someone understanding help can put students at ease and facilitate learning. Additionally, the listening and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for his or her student is to instil confidence in themselves to achieve and overcome difficulties in their subject to the best of their ability. A tutor is the main source of wisdom. Textbooks and study materials give us information but a tutor is the one who guides a student in understanding the analytical logic behind the message and gives sufficient instances of its usage. I always believe in teaching concepts with real life examples.I prefer to use the things around me to teach…

The most important thing I can do for a student is build their confidence in their learning. By the time I have finished a term (or 2) with my student's, they are more confident, more intuitive and approach their work with excitement. Additionally, I will provide the necessary tools for a student to carry on to their further studies. If you're a…

The most important thing for a tutor is to be an individual that students can openly and freely talk to other than being able to give knowledge. Allowing students to feel understood helps them overcome thoughts of self doubt which can help further their advancement academically and to help them in their well-being. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is buiding their confidence and enjoyment of a subject that they perhaps once struggled with. I believe that if a student comes into a tutoring session each day begrudgingly with absolute hatred of a subject they won’t absorb what is being taught as well because they’d rather be somewhere…

The single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help that student engage with their learning. Decades of education research supports the simple fact that if a student is engaged in the topic being taught, the teaching itself will be infinitely more effective. Getting a student invested in the lesson and the content at hand,…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen skills -…

A tutor can engage the mind of a child and develop a love for the subject within the child. Education has the power to broaden horizons and inculcate a sense of satisfaction which I believe can be brought in by the help of a tutor. Being able to communicate at a level that the child understands is a must. As a tutor, you must be able to build a…

Inside DocklandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Hamish focused on place value and identifying prime numbers, using practice exam questions for consolidation.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through solving systems of linear equations by elimination and explored the distance formula between two points with visual explanations.

In Year 11, Ethan tackled function modelling with real-world examples (such as insect population growth) and analysed rectangular hyperbolas, including their transformations and asymptotes.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student's algebra work showed gaps due to incomplete homework and minimal revision of textbook questions—"she tended to skip the assigned practice," a tutor noted, which left some equation-solving steps unpracticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student felt overwhelmed by dense chemistry chapters and sometimes postponed review tasks; this led to confusion during multi-step equilibrium problems, especially when tired after tests.

In Year 4 maths, inconsistent working in times tables caused errors like "3 x 4 = 11."

A Year 12 student avoided asking for feedback on graphing questions, so misconceptions lingered into the next session.

Recent Achievements

One Docklands tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Maya, started their sessions feeling nervous about upcoming biology tests but now prompts herself to review marked work and pushes through practice questions independently—something she used to avoid.

In Year 10 maths, Hamish recently stopped skipping key steps when solving linear equations and inequalities; he now writes out double negatives rather than rushing, which helps him catch mistakes that previously cost marks.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Lola has become noticeably quicker at linking old and new maths topics on her own and has started presenting her solutions with clarity during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Library at the Dock—or at your child's school (with permission), like Haileybury College - City Boys.
