A tutor needs to understand that every student learns differently. Therefore it is important to understand, especially if a tutor has multiple students, that one lesson won't have the same effect on every student. Tutors must adapt to teach students specific details they do not know and in specific ways. I'm proficient at adapting my teaching…

To help them feel better. There are a lot of children who are scared of a subject or who always say „I‘m just not good at it“ and I want them to be able to say „Yeah, I understand it“ and feel better and more confident in the subject I am very patient and creative so I know many ways to explain one thing so that the individual child can…

The most important thing is to engage with the student. It is more beneficial for the student and tutor to work together and be open to new ideas or methods to tackle questions. Instead of the tutor forcing the student to use one method, engaging with the student will lead to the most effective way to solve the question and will lead to successful…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build independence. It's not just about teaching them the material it’s about empowering them to think for themselves and solve problems on their own. By encouraging self-reliance and critical thinking, I aim to give students the tools they need to succeed long after our…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is simply be open to answer any questions a student might have. They need to be able to grasp the entire concept so that it can be applied in their school work. My strengths as a tutor could be my patience and my willingness to go out of my way to help any student I can. I think I also have a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. Often at a young age if we fail to grasp a concept it can damage our self-confidence. Therefore it is a tutor's responsibility to bring out the 'never give up'attitude in students and motivate them to continue trying until they can overcome the hurdle. Tutors should…

I think it’s not only about teaching them the assigned subjects but also guiding them and boosting their confidence when it comes to exams, presentation or any other academical activities. It shouldn’t be one way classes it should always be interactive, interesting and innovative. I would also focus on maintaining the tutor and the student…

As a tutor, I feel the ultimate goal is to benefit the student to become an independent and confident learner. Mostly, students see their tutors as role models, so it’s very important to keep ourselves updated and supportive throughout and be ready to reach out to them academically and as a friend whenever in need. To conclude, having confidence…

Help him to go further and improve himself by providing better advice than a classroom teacher. I consider building confidence in a student highly important when tutoring. In my experience as a teacher, students often value one on one teaching where available. Being able to focus on one student and their needs within their own education, builds a more confident student whether in their work, or when seeking assistance from teachers. Building…

Inside DocklandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Hamish focused on place value and identifying prime numbers, using practice exam questions for consolidation.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through solving systems of linear equations by elimination and explored the distance formula between two points with visual explanations.

In Year 11, Ethan tackled function modelling with real-world examples (such as insect population growth) and analysed rectangular hyperbolas, including their transformations and asymptotes.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student's algebra work showed gaps due to incomplete homework and minimal revision of textbook questions—"she tended to skip the assigned practice," a tutor noted, which left some equation-solving steps unpracticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student felt overwhelmed by dense chemistry chapters and sometimes postponed review tasks; this led to confusion during multi-step equilibrium problems, especially when tired after tests.

In Year 4 maths, inconsistent working in times tables caused errors like "3 x 4 = 11."

A Year 12 student avoided asking for feedback on graphing questions, so misconceptions lingered into the next session.

Recent Achievements

One Docklands tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Maya, started their sessions feeling nervous about upcoming biology tests but now prompts herself to review marked work and pushes through practice questions independently—something she used to avoid.

In Year 10 maths, Hamish recently stopped skipping key steps when solving linear equations and inequalities; he now writes out double negatives rather than rushing, which helps him catch mistakes that previously cost marks.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Lola has become noticeably quicker at linking old and new maths topics on her own and has started presenting her solutions with clarity during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Library at the Dock—or at your child's school (with permission), like Haileybury College - City Boys.
