The most important things a maths tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, create a safe space for questions, and teach in a way that suits their learning style. I know how competitive and burdensome academics can be, especially for students in high achieving environments ( e.g Melbourne high), so I believe being a pillar of understanding…

The relationship between me and the student is very essential. It is utmost important that I ensure that both the student and the parent is happy with the way I teach and how they see me, therefore my first impression is extremely. I would also need to keep an eye on how the student is progressing by comparing the grade when he/she first began…

A great tutor also provides help outside of class/tutor times. I have great communication skills developed through my past jobs I have worked as well as doing an allied health…

The most important thing that a maths tutor can do for a student is to support them along their learning journey. Learning is not a linear experience and it does take a lot of patience, time, and effort, and as a tutor, it is important to guide and support their student throughout the journey. It is also important to be a mentor and someone that…

From my own experience, the most meaningful thing a maths tutor can do for a student is extending their support to outside of a tuition class. Openly allowing students to interact with you outside a tuition class for any questions or concerns is a simple but meaningful step a tutor can take in powering progress for the student. I believe that I…

Breaking down complex questions into small, simple parts makes it easy for students to grasp, and it also guides students to learn to solve problems independently. I think a maths tutor should show the concepts to understand in the most simple way. By doing so, the student will be able to strengthen it at home. I think that a maths tutor must be able to alter the way they teach to personalise the learning experience for the student as different students will receive and reflect upon information in a unique manner. The tutor should aim to recognise a student's traits and utilise the student's strengths and weaknesses to ensure they are able to improve and…

Inside Doncaster EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised long division with remainders and explored onomatopoeias to strengthen both numeracy and creative language skills.

For Year 8, Lily worked through textbook review questions in measurement, focusing on applying Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths in right-angled triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Daniel concentrated on trigonometry by identifying which trigonometric ratio (sine, cosine, or tangent) to use when solving for unknown angles or sides in various problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided making her own notes on cellular respiration, which meant key details (like inputs/outputs) were not fully memorised; as one tutor noted, "she needs to create her own notes to help with memorisation."

Meanwhile, in Year 9 Maths, another student relied heavily on mental calculations for algebra and skipped writing out steps—when mistakes happened, it became difficult to spot where things went wrong.

A Year 7 student sometimes struggled to identify what the question was asking in worded problems and spent extra time working backwards rather than building a clear process first.

Recent Achievements

One Doncaster East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to attempt harder algebra questions now works through complex inequalities independently, giving every question a try and getting them right.

In VCE Biology, another high school student who used to rely heavily on hints now confidently explains each stage of photosynthesis without prompting and answers new cellular respiration questions accurately.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, a younger learner who once mixed up coin values can now count $5 and $10 notes correctly while adding up change, finishing her money exercises with no help needed.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

What a lovely, patient and kind person Alfred is. He got straight into the maths and hit it off with Kent immediately.

I have been meaning to email but time got away. Hazel is loving Rabiba! She's just perfect for her. In fact when we discussed extending the time to two hours in a week or so Hazel agreed instantly. I was in shock. We are all very happy with her so far. She's very reliable and polite.

Carol has been great with Sarah and as you said it takes a few months to start seeing an impact., but Sarah understands her and relates well to Carol.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Donburn Primary School.
