Student confidence is the most important thing a tutor builds through teaching them. Breaking down complex questions into small, simple parts makes it easy for students to grasp, and it also guides students to learn to solve problems independently. Maths involve numbers and logical justification, which means logical thinking and problem-solving,…

Whilst a tutor should always aim to improve the student's grades and achieve good results, a tutor should have the ultimate goal of structuring the student's thinking towards the subject that portrays it in a positive light and builds a sense of confidence. This sets the student up for success in the future. Patience, ability to reframe and…

To me, it’s important that tutor obviously needs to enhance students’s academic abilities, but it’s also important for tutors to provide guidance in other aspects of students’ life, such as their mental health and their attitudes towards learning and schooling. I believe if I can become friends with the students in my teaching process,…

I believe the most important things would be providing a supportive environment and fostering independent thinking of students with guidance. I believe studying is an enjoyment, instead of struggle. The essence of a tutor is to break down complex ideas that make sense to students, yet building up their confidence throughout the way. Through…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to understand their strengths and weaknesses so they can adapt their teaching style to best fit the needs of the student. I think my strengths as a tutor are straight-forwardness and encouraging independence. While I understand that the main goal of a tutor is to support the student,…

I believe that the most important things a tutor can do, other than to further their studies, is to be a role-model of sorts which the students can look up to and be comfortable with. Tutors are not just there to teach, but also be mentors for the students and guide them where need be. I believe that the most significant strength I have is making…

I think that a tutor must be able to alter the way they teach to personalise the learning experience for the student as different students will receive and reflect upon information in a unique manner. The tutor should aim to recognise a student's traits and utilise the student's strengths and weaknesses to ensure they are able to improve and…

I believe that I am an…

The most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student. As a tutor, your job is to provide tailored education and guidance unique to the student themselves in a way that a teacher cannot. Inside DonvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zac focused on building confidence with reading the time and practising times tables alongside single-digit addition.

For Year 9, Carla tackled challenging coordinate geometry questions from her holiday homework and solved literal equations to prepare for class.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben worked through exam-style questions on solving exponential, quadratic, and linear equations, as well as using the discriminant to determine solution numbers and reviewing differentiation basics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided creating personal notes on cellular respiration and the light-dependent reactions, relying instead on memorisation without deeper processing—Brielle needs to go back and memorise some steps…and create her own notes.

In Year 10 Maths, another student hesitated to continue working through algebraic rearrangement if unsure, stopping mid-problem rather than persisting: She would be going in the right direction but stop because she does not know what the next step is.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner repeatedly forgot times tables practice homework. These habits led to incomplete revision, loss of momentum, or gaps that reappeared in later tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Donvale tutor noticed a big shift in Phoebe (Year 10), who previously hesitated with index laws—now she tackles complex algebraic expressions using these rules and recently completed a mini informal test on her own, applying old knowledge to new problems.

Carla (Year 11) used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, but after mastering the substitution method, she now moves through related questions independently without needing prompts.

In primary sessions, Scarlett has gone from mixing up place values to confidently identifying numbers and counting money correctly; last week she added up $5 and $10 notes without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Pines School.
