A good teacher can make a good difference in a student's life. A tutor can also give good guidance to the student, letting them aware of the good and bad things about life. A teacher not only teaches a subject to the student but also builds a certain part of the student's character. A teacher also builds a student's future, if a student is…

The most important thing for a tutor to do with a student is to be patient and understanding while helping them. This can benefit a students confidence, which is highly important in achieving good marks and understanding in the subject. Another important this a tutor can do is provide students with some harder questions to help students practice…

A tutor should be able to identify the weaknesses and strengths of a student and lift their confidence first. An excellent tutor has patience to work with the student until the student's needs are achieved. Giving positive feedback when they present their work, which will then stimulate their work ethic. My 25 years of experience [as a…

I believe that a tutor is also a mentor to their students. This comes from personal experience where I had THE BEST math tutor and life mentor in my high school years. My tutor has definitely set the path for my life and I thank her very much in shaping the person I have become. I consider a good tutor to be one who is dedicated and genuinely…

I belive that tutors are not merely teachers but mentors that guide students through their learning. Tutors, especially those who has been a student themselves are able to employ their experiences to provide advice to students on effective study methods and techniques that can truely build a student’s confidence for a certain subject. Having…

I believe an essential aspect to include in tutoring is helping students to develop metacognitive and study skills. In mainstream education, the uniqueness of student learning processes is often neglected. When I tutor students, I highly value teaching the specific study skills that will be most effective for them, imparting not merely content…

I think it is very important to ask the student if they’re still attentive and understanding after every while of teaching. This is because of the student have lost concentration, they will not be able to learn anything and the lesson will be effectively useless. Thus it is important to sometimes insert some humour or times to stretch to regain…

Helping the student understand the concept clearly.Once a concept is taught and examples are explained,I firmly believe that it is duty of the tutor to make sure that the students solves/writes the problem/writing on their own.And proper follow ups of the mistakes made by the student is also another important one.Other than that, how to embrace…

Tutoring to me is about ensuring the student can feel comfortable in their understanding and are not afraid to ask for help, and can do so without any judgement. In the past I have known school teachers to somewhat look down on students for lack of comprehension around maths problems and will aim to ensure that no student feels this way and will…

Resilience after drawbacks. As a tutor, you can\'t approach each student as if they are the same person learning the same subject. Each individual has different weaknesses and strengths. For a tutor to recognise this fact is detrimental to ensuring the tutor can target each student\'s weaknesses effectively instead of wasting time. Having been a student myself, I know time…

I think developing a friendly relationship is one of the most important things a tutor can do. By doing this, students feel more confident and happy to truly engage with their tutor, ask any questions they possibly could have, which I think ultimately leads to better learning. As a one-on-one teaching assistant with more than one year of experience, providing some notes and problem-solving skills to students, and the notes would not be covered by their school. Furthermore, the tutoring note would be based on the studying situation of different students, so the teaching notes would have strong pertinence and thus help…

The most important things a tutor can do are build the student’s confidence, create a supportive learning environment, and help them understand concepts in a way that makes sense to them. teach understanding of a topic rather than how to do a problem so the student can tackle more difficult problems on there own without help. With understanding you can answer any question. From my past experience as a tutor I have seen many students cry over their results they've gotten from their previous test. As their tutor/mentor I consider it to be very important to let them know that it is not the end of the world and it is much more important to evaluate on their mistakes or errors that they have made on the test to achieve…

In my opinion, the relationship beyond subject tutoring is the most important aspect of a tutor. A great tutor must have the ability to connect deeply with the students to give them personalised teaching methods and materials, which ultimately increase both efficiency and effectiveness in teaching. In order of doing so, a tutor must have a great…

Adele, Donvale

Inside DonvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zac focused on building confidence with reading the time and practising times tables alongside single-digit addition.

For Year 9, Carla tackled challenging coordinate geometry questions from her holiday homework and solved literal equations to prepare for class.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben worked through exam-style questions on solving exponential, quadratic, and linear equations, as well as using the discriminant to determine solution numbers and reviewing differentiation basics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided creating personal notes on cellular respiration and the light-dependent reactions, relying instead on memorisation without deeper processing—Brielle needs to go back and memorise some steps…and create her own notes.

In Year 10 Maths, another student hesitated to continue working through algebraic rearrangement if unsure, stopping mid-problem rather than persisting: She would be going in the right direction but stop because she does not know what the next step is.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner repeatedly forgot times tables practice homework. These habits led to incomplete revision, loss of momentum, or gaps that reappeared in later tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Donvale tutor noticed a big shift in Phoebe (Year 10), who previously hesitated with index laws—now she tackles complex algebraic expressions using these rules and recently completed a mini informal test on her own, applying old knowledge to new problems.

Carla (Year 11) used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, but after mastering the substitution method, she now moves through related questions independently without needing prompts.

In primary sessions, Scarlett has gone from mixing up place values to confidently identifying numbers and counting money correctly; last week she added up $5 and $10 notes without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Pines School.
