Motivating a student is arguably even more important. Any assistance is meaningless if an individual doesn't have a desire to learn. Helping a student to understand what they want to learn and why is the thing I value above all as a teacher. I feel that I have a firm grasp on mathematics that would be useful to share with others. I have a desire…

As a tutor it is crucial to deeply understand the ambitions and goals of each student; their current level, and where they want to end up or what they want to achieve. This helps the tutor and student to create realistic but valuable goals, and underlying expectations throughout the experience. I think that as a tutor, I have strengths in truly…

1. A tutor can shape how a student thinks about a particular topic/subject. If while teaching something the tutor himself/herself is not interested then the student will be less likely to pay 100% attention 2. A tutor can empower the student to learn better and at their own pace. Just letting the student know that it is okay if you take more time…

To be honest, which helps to develop rapport and trust, be flexible, and willing to share my own experiences. Teach the student how to learn as the ultimate goal is to help the student become an independent learner. Be patient, as what is obvious or easy for me may not be so for the student. and have good listening skills. Above all, be a…

I believe that the most important I can do for a student is being a role model that a student can be comfortable to ask questions and address problems and issues within their academic career. Eliminating the fear of being looked down upon for not understanding a concept and the loss of moral is the first step to improving learning and growth. This…

A tutor needs to be able to adapt to whatever questions or queries the student has. In my role as a PASS Leader at Adelaide Uni, I always had material prepared, which occasionally I didn't use because the students wanted to focus on something else. You need to be able to think on your feet and find a way to present the problem in a way the student…

I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. My experience as a tennis coach has shown me how different students learn at…

Our modern world is built around education and every student can expect to experience a lot of it in the future. Therefore, it is most important that a tutor should model genuine interest in learning (both the subject matter and how to learn well), so that the student him/herself enjoys the process and is encouraged to become a lifelong learner.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is reassure them that it is perfectly normal to not understand a topic straight away. Tutors must make sure that students are not ashamed of needing help, and do not feel 'stupid' or 'dumb' for not understanding. I am a very patient person who is good at listening. When I am in a tutoring role…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is getting them motivated to work hard. It is important that the students themselves have a desire to improve. Another majorly important thing is a focus on understanding and confidence in the concepts rather than finding patterns in repetitive practice. Additionally, tutors should…

Confidence is the most important thing a tutor can bring to a student struggling with English. Knowledge and new skills can be taught to anyone, but a tutor should be able to instil a confidence within student so they can bring these skills into their learning but also into their everyday life. This is achieved by building relationships with…

Inside Dover GardensTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jessica focused on expressing decimal numbers as percentages and converting fractions to percentages, along with simplifying ratios.

Year 8 student Lucas worked through NAPLAN numeracy practice, specifically ordering decimal numbers to three places and exploring the relationships between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

For Year 6, Chloe revised equivalent fraction families using a dice game and practised multiplication and division by 10, 100, and 1000, also reinforcing division facts for the number 7.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student, when asked to label place value headings (hundredths to Hundred Thousands), left sections incomplete and mixed up the order—this led to confusion in decimal subtraction later that lesson.

In Year 10 algebra revision, "his understanding of the basics needs to be refreshed," but he skipped feedback on fraction division and didn't attempt practice questions, relying instead on worked examples.

During a senior session, one student appeared stressed and "on edge"—he avoided tackling new equation types independently and preferred watching online walkthroughs over active problem-solving. This meant key skills for upcoming assessments were not fully developed or practiced.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Dover Gardens recently saw a Year 9 student, Kai, who'd struggled with algebra, pick up the rules for fractions and confidently use new methods to isolate variables—he even tackled adding and dividing to get x on one side without hesitation.

In another session, Brooke (Year 10) chose to work through complex algebraic equations by hand instead of relying on her calculator as she had before.

Meanwhile, Jye (Year 5), who was once hesitant about reading aloud, now uses word attack strategies when faced with unfamiliar words and self-corrects while reading narrative texts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cultural Centre Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Stella Maris Parish School.
