To ensure that the student understands everything fully. That is what a tutor is for, and no concept or idea should be left unturned. Everything should be thoroughly explored until full understanding has been achieved. I am an extremely patient person who will spend as long as required to explain a concept or idea. I also use down-to-earth…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to make the content understandable rather than just helping to memorise it. But also to normalise mistakes and to assert the importance of educated guessing. Any student can learn faster by giving something a go rather than waiting until they are certain. I believe I can explain and break down…

I feel that a tutor can basically change a student's perception to a particular subject. A tutor has the power to build the foundations of a subject in a simplified and innovative way such that it is comprehended easily by the students. When it comes to teaching new concepts, I seldom go by the book. I think it is more important to give a…

A tutor is not there to do a student's homework for them but rather to help them think and problem solve in new ways so that they can complete their work more effectively and be a more independent learner. Thus, a tutor can help by bringing with themselves a large amount of knowledge in the subject area(s) and by having a patient and understanding…

As a tutor, it's your job to adapt your way of teaching based on what works best for the student and use different approaches to explain a concept so the student understands it completely. Inside DownerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Owen revised algebraic techniques, including expanding and factorising expressions, as well as checking solutions using Pythagoras' Theorem.

For Year 9, Hannah worked through a variety of probability concepts such as conditional probability and Venn diagrams, practising with real-life examples and diagrammatic representations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Rhys focused on the surface area and volume of 3D shapes, reinforcing key formulas with electronic flashcards and addressing areas for improvement in fraction work.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, one student showed vague recall of key reactions and required several reminders to describe the process of hydrogen and oxygen forming Hâ‚‚O; this gap in specific knowledge left him unable to confidently explain chemical changes.

A Year 10 Maths student hesitated when unfamiliar with algebraic expressions involving variables—when asked for the probability of drawing a red marble from X red and Y green marbles, he felt stuck and attempted to use incorrect strategies.

"Needs to write working out down," noted a tutor after observing over-reliance on notes during problem-solving in Year 9, which masked underlying conceptual gaps.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Downer noticed a Year 11 student who used to make repeated errors in algebra now independently spotted and corrected her own mistake while working through weighted graph problems—something she'd hesitated to do before.

In chemistry, another high schooler who struggled with understanding chemical formulae last term was able to explain the process of atoms sharing electrons and answered related questions without any prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who previously relied on help for word problems created her own shortcut using the five times table to quickly work out percentage discounts, showing new initiative during their {Downer tutoring} session.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Jamie has said he thinks the maths tutoring is good and feels more confident in maths tests at school. He seems to have a positive attitude towards his maths tutoring sessions and responds well to Cal's patient and encouraging approach.

Lauren and Caitlin have got off to a good start. Lauren is very understanding of Caitlin's needs and has worked really hard on preparing her for her first term Math exam. Caitlin has already built some confidence knowing she will do better ( after starting with Lauren). She also knows it is only early days. Lauren is very good at explaining things at a Caitlin level.

Andres is doing a fantastic job, he has a great rapport with Rio and is incredibly professional in his approach. Thank you for providing Rio with such a wonderful maths tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dickson Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Emmaus Christian School.
