Instead of simply teaching the concepts, a tutor should try to teach the student the logic behind the concept; he/she should try to simplify difficult concepts in a way students can grasp. Moreover, I think it's important that a tutor lets the student work on the problems first, let them brainstorm and develop their thinking skills instead of…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is tailor their approach to the student’s needs. Their learning method, their stuggles and strengths. A tutor should help develop the student's study skills, and be able to provide specific and constructive feedback. Patience and flexibility are key qualities to have because it will empower…

I believe a tutor should inspire a student to reach for certain goals by first of all being an example of greatness him/herself or by pointing the student towards greatness. A tutor could achieve this by citing examples of great people whose names lived beyond them thus helping the student find purpose in life. Once the passion to become more and…

"Tutoring improves the tutee's self-esteem, attitude toward subject matter, and academic performance as well as personal growth." Indeed, from a personal viewpoint, tutoring is not only providing additional support for students to 'complete' their homeworks. Building student's self-esteem and stimulating their interest are equally important. I…

listening to students and finding out what they want out of the sessions and how they prefer to learn. By doing so we can offer a method of learning that's customized to them as an individual and not as a class. Learning occurs in many formats and a tutor should provide a format that isn't inherently applied in schools - aiding in the…

Besides from general knowledge of the subjects, understanding the strengths as well as weaknesses of the students is a must for personal tutors. We can develop the most effective way to teach if we are fully aware of these factors. Also, one of the most important things a tutor can do is to be patient and considerate with their students. This way…

I believe, more than anything else, that a tutoring space should feel judgement free for a student. A student should not feel hesitant to ask questions or to clarify a concept. In fact, I believe it to be a good sign if a student is able to outright say that my explanation is not what they need or understand. Fostering such a safe and trusting…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is. Allow students to make mistakes, and making mistakes is not really a terrible thing. Even many mistakes are the best process for students to learn. And the student makes mistakes and reflects on them so that what he gains is what he can gain for himself. What do you think…

Inside DrumcondraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Eliz revised subtraction, practised chance and decimal arithmetic, and was introduced to Roman numerals, using short revision exercises.

In Year 8, Alyssa tackled quadratic equations and worked through examples of geometry problems involving transversal lines and angles.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ben focused on surds and indices as well as practising addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions through step-by-step problem solving.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 mathematics, one student struggled to recall multiplication tables during division tasks, which slowed progress and sometimes led to incomplete solutions; as a tutor noted, "forgetting the table made it tough to finish the problem."

In Year 9 algebra, a tendency emerged to rely on guessing rather than carefully working through equations—especially when under time pressure.

A Year 11 student's written work in graph sketching lacked clear steps or annotations, making it hard to check for errors later.

These moments left students feeling less confident after practice sessions and sometimes unsure where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Drumcondra tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to speak up during sessions now actively asks clarifying questions when tackling complex differentiation problems—she's even started trying out the chain rule on her own before seeking help.

In a recent high school maths session, another student, who used to guess answers in multi-step algebra tasks, showed real progress by methodically re-arranging equations and checking each step for errors without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by reading a new chapter aloud fluently and self-correcting tricky words she would have skipped over just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Geelong West Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - BVNV Geelong.
