The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

My students always have so much fun in my classes. I think it is important, because when students are enjoying themselves in the learning process, it makes it so much easier to learn. That is why I feel it is so important to build an easy rapport with students in the beginning, making the student feel at ease, and comfortable, putting the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. I felt that if I didn't build the trust with my students, then no matter how much I try, they will not improve. Therefore, building trust - looking confident and knowing what I am doing. My strength is making sure the students understand the concepts.…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. One of the important that a tutor can do for a student is being a good listener. Before heading towards the subject content the tutor needs to listen to their students. We need to know their mood and level of understanding in order to continue. There is no use in continuing with the subject if the student doesn't understand anything, so the tutor…

I opine that understanding the IQ and how to upgrade it is the key responsibility of a mentor. It is also imperative that a tutor should be patient if a child is not understanding a question and try to explore new ways to make it clear. I am very loving and patient as I know kids take time to understand the key concepts. Non-judgemental is the key…

Adapt to their needs. As a tutor, your job is to assist in their learning experience, and get growth from the student. There is no one way to teach that is effective for everyone. Equally important is building the students confidence, creating an environment where they feel capable and motivated to tackle challenges. Providing…

Inside DrummoyneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jess focused on revising for NAPLAN and tackling end-of-year exam questions, building confidence with key assessment formats.

For Year 8, Jess worked through algebra topics including factorisation—particularly rules involving negatives—and also practised finding areas of circles using formulas distinguishing radius from diameter.

Meanwhile, Year 9 lessons included mastering linear relationships by graphing lines with two intercepts and rearranging equations, as well as extending understanding of trigonometry to include sine, cosine, tangent and their inverse functions through textbook examples.

Recent Challenges

Several process challenges were noted across year levels.

In Year 8 maths, Jess left 7 sheets of homework, which meant she missed out on valuable feedback and practice with ratios.

A Year 9 student repeatedly relied on mental calculation for simpler algebra steps but didn't show working—"even if it is a more simple operation that can be performed in her head"—making it hard to trace sign errors when answers were off.

For a Year 10 topic test, one student forgot to check subtraction signs during simplification, leading to repeated mistakes and extra correction time instead of learning new concepts.

Recent Achievements

A Drummoyne tutor noticed one high school student, Jess, has begun to self-correct minor errors in her algebra and now regularly checks her multi-step working—where she previously skipped over mistakes.

Another older student who struggled with statistics earlier in the term showed clear progress, as seen by recent test results that reflected a solid grasp of key concepts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student experienced a breakthrough with times tables after weeks of practice and even explained the "EF procedure" back to the tutor for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mark's Catholic Primary School.
