Giving them encouragement and prompting them to keep trying. Emphasizing repetition is very important. It builds a 'keep trying' attitude in the students that will carry them through school and further on in their lives. I am patient with students. I make an effort to be calm, and try different ways of explaining concepts/ideas/techniques so that…

Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. This should extend beyond the tutoring time as the student develops the skills required to support…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable to communicate with. Communication is key for a student's success, if they don't know how to do certain things, they can ask the tutor. Sometimes the tutor does not always know the answer, but the tutor is seen as a reliable source so whichever information the…

The most important thing is to pay complete attention to the students. The students must be tested regularly so that the tutor knows if the student has grasped stuff or not. Clare

Inside Dudley ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lily focused on solving algebraic equations and revising fraction rules, including converting fractions into decimals using long division.

In Year 9, Jacob practised expanding brackets and worked through difference of two squares problems with step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sienna tackled factorisation and quadratic trinomials, applying these skills to financial problem scenarios to build confidence ahead of her assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 maths, a student often relied on her notes during exercises but didn't revisit them later, which meant she kept making the same sign mistakes in algebra despite reminders—she made the same mistake regarding 'sign changing' very often even with notes available.

For a Year 10 test, another student didn't let the tutor know ahead of time, missing out on tailored preparation and feeling less confident in worded problems.

In primary years, one student forgot to do her homework entirely for a shapes task, leading to confusion when new formulas appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Dudley Park tutor recently noticed a big shift in Athena, a high school student who used to need reminders but now actively takes notes and solves algebraic problems on her own—she even scored 87% on her latest test.

Another high schooler, Constanza, previously hesitated to ask questions but has started posting thoughtful queries during sessions and now finishes homework independently by applying strategies from previous lessons.

In Year 4, Alyse was initially unsure with new maths topics, but after just one session she applied the taught formula correctly and solved all the given worded problems without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Mitch has been so wonderful with Nick and is doing an amazing job tutoring Nick, especially getting Nick focused on completing his maths homework. He has worked with Nick so well and has established a great working relationship with him. His patient demeanor is certainly a strong attribute and has made tutoring for Nick so much easier.  Nick has commented several times that 'he has learnt more with Mitch today than he has all week with his teacher'.

I am delighted with Domenic's tutoring. I was concerned about how the tutoring would go because Jake struggles with a high level of anxiety but Domenic has put him at his ease.  He has engaged very well with my son, and is enthusiastic, encouraging, knowledgable and organised. He explains concepts in a way that Jake can grasp them: Jake has had at least one 'ah-ha' moment in every session. Domenic is also always punctual and polite. He has made a big difference already to Jett's confidence and performance at Maths. I look forward to having him continue to tutor Jake through his HSC.

We are certainly happy and off to a great start. Edward has been great, punctual & helpful. I am confident this  trend will continue and George's math will only improve.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prospect Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosary School.
