The most crucial part of tutoring is identifying and addressing a student's most significant weaknesses. Since teachers in school are focused on teaching the syllabus, they might not have time to cater to the needs of each individual student. Conversely, a physics tutor can spend time analysing someone's most common mistakes to find out which…

The most important thing a physics tutor can do is to provide the student with deep understanding of concepts so that the student can approach future challenges with the confidence that they can work through it on their own, even if it is unfamiliar. In addition to improving the student's understanding of a particular subject area, the real value comes from: (1) learning *how* to learn; in other words, getting to understand the many resources available (web and paper), attacking the problem, and getting the answer independently. This is empowering for the student, and essential for further…

I think the biggest benefit a physics tutor can have is to help instill in a student a sense of confidence in their ability to learn. Regardless of how much subject matter a student is able to retain, they will have a lot of learning to do beyond when they are being tutored, so I believe it is at least as important for students to be ‘learning…

It's the responsibility of a physics tutor to meet students where they are at. Tutors should come to learn the boundaries of what their students do and do not understand and create structure and context for pushing those boundaries to ultimately envelop the knowledge they need to succeed. This can sometimes mean "back-filling" missing knowledge or…

The most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to show that they care. I think if a student knows that their tutor is really trying and really cares about the student, then the student will try that much harder with their studies in response. I think my desire to assist students in their studies is one of my greatest strengths…

Inside Duffys ForestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Viktoria worked on simplifying fractions, including both proper and improper types, as well as geometry skills with perimeter and area using shared whiteboard activities.

Year 9 Lachlan revised factorising quadratic equations and grouped like terms while also using Desmos to visualise algebraic graphs for better understanding.

For Year 11, Brandon practiced combinatorics and permutations in probability, followed by a review of recent test questions to clarify misunderstandings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 calculus, messy homework setting out and not looking back at notes led to repeated confusion with chain and product rules. "He needs to look back at his notes when doing homework," a tutor observed—time was lost searching for methods rather than practicing application.

In Year 10 probability, unclear working made it difficult to spot where conditional reasoning went astray.

For a Year 5 student tackling perimeter and fractions, skipping steps or relying on copying formats resulted in missed details; rushed columns meant simple errors crept into otherwise solid logic. Confidence dropped after setbacks, slowing progress even more.

Recent Achievements

One Duffys Forest tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled with fractions now accurately solved them in test questions—an area that had been a stumbling block before.

In a recent high school session, Brandon challenged himself by tackling advanced GCSE-level surds problems without hesitation and began using a highlighter independently to break down worded maths questions, something he hadn't tried until recently.

Meanwhile, Viktoria in primary school has started finishing her daily multiplication sheets much faster than before and now consistently attempts every question herself before seeking help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Arman was fabulous, very thorough and explained maths to my daughter in a manner which she was able to grasp easily.

Verity improved a great deal with her maths last year. Her results from school where excellent and have thanked Peter very much. He did such an awesome job in tutoring her.

Our tutor is wonderful and has been extremely helpful and accommodating with scheduling.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Terrey Hills Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Japanese International School.
