Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. This should extend beyond the tutoring time as the student develops the skills required to support…

Understanding and learning about the child's needs and adapting your teaching style to best suit their needs. It is also important to develop a trusting relationship in which the child knows that the tutor is there to provide them with the best support they can offer to aid their learning. I think the most important thing is to give them an interest in the subjects. In my study path, I realized that the easiest way to study well in a subject is loving them. Therefore, instead of providing them with a full of academic lessons, teachers should help them feel entertained in the lessons. Then, they will find out and get better by…

Finding ways to get students interested and curious about what they are learning, and giving them general methods for problem-solving. Although helping them solve specific problems is important, if they are passionate about the topic and know how to approach problem-solving this gives them the desire and confidence to tackle a range of questions.…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths and areas of improvement in particular to improve the student's overall performance in a particular subject area. Thus, I believe it is really important to enable the student to feel empowered about their learning through support and encouragement. This…

From my experience, one of the most important thing I can do is finding out the weakness of students and helping them overcome that weakness instead of letting them away from it. Tutors should be honest, too when there is the question that we do not know. Last but not least, tutors should help students build confidence and give support as much as…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. Become students’ friends so you can lead the children to the book, most students don’t want study because the teacher is too strict and always pushing them, if the tutor can become their friends, they can lead the student to study voluntary. It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

Inside DulwichTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex revised area and perimeter of composite shapes and practiced basic algebra exercises to strengthen foundational problem-solving.

For Year 10, Emily focused on completing the square in quadratic equations and explored different forms of parabolas for graphing, using worked examples to see how each form affects the graph's shape.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam tackled parabola applications in geometry and reflected on a recent test to consolidate key concepts before moving into extension work.

Recent Challenges

Forgetting essential materials like textbooks and calculators for lessons led to lost time settling in before beginning problem sets.

In Year 10 algebra, an attempt to "do things in head" rather than showing working meant errors—especially with completing the square—went unnoticed until marks were lost; as one tutor noted, "mistakes are barely detected and noticed when you go back and check."

A Year 11 student's written work was hard to follow due to rushed layout, making revision difficult later.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner struggled to articulate solutions aloud, freezing during worded fraction problems involving kilos.

Recent Achievements

A Dulwich tutoring session saw a Year 11 student, Ariana, move from confusion with completing the square to independently solving quadratic equations and even achieving 70/74 on her recent test—she can now explain each step logically out loud.

In Year 9 maths, Wyatt, who used to hesitate with indices, now reliably solves them without help and shows clearer reasoning behind his answers compared to previous weeks.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently began taking initiative in tackling unfamiliar problems instead of waiting for guidance, showing new independence by attempting questions before asking for explanations.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rose Park Primary School.
